Cocker House
replied on: 3/14/2008 2:19:47 AM John Day chr 5 June 1770 married Ruth Shaw 24 May 1795 Trowell Nottinghamshire. They had 8 children :- William chr 2 Sep 1796 Trowell died 2 October 1796 Trowell. John chr 3 March 1799 Trowell. died 9 Sep 1928. Sarah chr 14 Sep 1800 Trowell Mary chr 18 July 1802 Trowell Mary chr 18 Jul 1802 Trowell William chr 4 Mar 1804 Trowell Hannibal chr 12 March 1806 Trowell Hannah chr 6 Aug 1807 Trowell Clarissa chr 4 Sep 1808 Trowell John Day then married Mary Walker 10 April 1808 in Eastwood. I realise that this marriage date is later than the christening date of the last child by his first wife but there was sometimes a delay between birthdate and christening date. His son, John Day (3 Mar 1799) married Myra Clarke 5 Jan 1823 in Eastwood. They had 4 children :- John chr 18 August 1823 Eastwood Notts Henry chr 17 Sep 1824 Eastwood Notts George chr 26 Dec 1828 Eastwood Notts William Thomas chr 13 Sep 1827 Eastwood. John Day (18 Aug 1823) married Isabella Cullen (1822 Rolleston Notts). They had 6 children:- William 1843 Eastwood Notts Mary Ann 1846 Eastwood Isabella 1849 Eastwood John 1852 Eastwood Sarah 1854 Eastwood Thomas 1857 Eastwood It is here that it becomes quite complex. Census records and birth register entries indicate that the same John Day had 5 children by Elizabeth who is listed on the census as his wife but for which there is no marriage register entry. These children are:- Fanny Elizabeth 1854 Smalley Derbyshire Jane 1855 Smalley Elizabeth 1860 Smalley Charles 1861 Smalley Festus 1864 Horsley Woodhouse. As you will realise there is an overlap of his childrens birthdates with his first wife and second partner. The situation is somewhat clarified by the 1861 census which indicates that his first wife Isabella has returned to the home of her father John Cullen in Rolleston and lives there with three of her children, John, Sarah and Thomas, the birthplaces of which are indicated as Eastwood. One can only assume that there were twoo simultaneous relationships and when this was discovered by Isabella she returned to her fathers home. You may ask what has this to do with Cocker House. The answer is :- When John Day (1799) died in 1828 his widow Myra then remarried to John Farnsworth (1800 Eastwood) They were married on 4th May 1830 at St Nicholas Church Nottingham. They had at least 4 children :- Phoebe 1831 Eastwood Mary 1833 Eastwood Frederick 1834 Eastwood Festus 1836 Eastwood. Now on the 1841 census at Cocker House we have shown :- John Farnsworth 40 Mira (Myra) 40 with their 4 children mentioned above ..and two of her children by her first marriage John Day 15 and Henry Day 16. I understand from the person for whom I am researching that there is some family oral tradition of a major altercation between this same John Day and the other residents at Cocker House. One can only assume that it may have had something to do with rights of residence or inheritance. I am continuing research into this. I hope this assists others in their research. Any additional information would be appreciated. |
