The Sitwells seem to have been very much part of Smalley life, so I assume there may be an overlap of information. |

replied on: 2/6/2005 7:01:02 PM Stainsby Hall is an odd one, as it was technically in Horsley Woodhouse, but it was only a stone's throw from the centre of Smalley, and the Sitwells were the patrons of Smalley Church. I'll dig some stuff out soon (if no-one else does) and put a brief summary of the place on here for comment. |

replied on: 2/7/2005 7:03:59 PM The only thing I know about Stainsby Hall is that it was a Roman Catholic school during the war. I used to deliver groceries there when I worked at the Meadow Dairy in Heanor. Father Shannon was in charge. |

Breadsall, Derbys. ********************************************* On the Census form, the House is listed as in Morley. As a pre-teenager, i too used to visit the House on a couple or so occasions. This was in the company of Dr. Donnigan and his two young sons. Curiously, we three boys never ran into any pupils of the school/place, but we did enjoy exploring the large, lush, green lawns at the back. Outside the House, the grounds were very interesting, but inside it was so cold, with a gloomy feeling too. I'm glad i never went to that school. Wrong House. Not sure where the Stainsby House at Morley was - but obviously owned by the same family, which explains the same name. I wonder if they used to get each other's mail? |

Stainsby House - 20th Century
replied on: 7/11/2005 7:42:31 AM Stainsby House was in the hands of the Wilmot-Sitwells until at least the first world war. Between the wars, the family left the Smalley estate, which was split up. The main house was sold to a poultry farmer. Around the time of the second world war, the hall was acquired by the Brothers of Mercy, which ran "St. Aloysius College," a boarding school for boys in Highgate, London. The school was evacuated to Smalley soon after the outbreak of the war, and remained for the duration. After the war, Stainsby House reverted to poultry farming, and its condition deteriorated. Demolition of the house took place in 1972 - from then on read the topic on the new Stainsby House. |
