The 1891 Census gives an address - either on, or just off Loscoe Rd; It's recorded as 'The Pines' or 'The River' with its then occupants. Any idea where this may have been. Azzabuv. |

The Pines/The River
replied on: 2/22/2005 12:18:00 PM Yes, i'd checked the map, Robert. What with 'Heanor's America', 'Bunkers Hill' and now 'The Pines' or 'The River', it's as if someone in that time period invented those local names hopefully for posterity. Unfortunately though, it looks as if their life's limit consisted of a few years to a decade? A challange for us......... Azzabuv. |

The Pines/The River
replied on: 2/23/2005 12:35:33 PM Here's the info. Peter. One family. The name of the place is given only as 'The Pines', or 'The River'. Marshall, John. Head, aged 28. Coal miner - Bn. East Leek, Leicestershire. Marshall, Minnie/Maisie?. Wife, aged 29 - Bn. Newark on Trent, Notts. Marshall, William. Son, aged 9, Scholar - Bn. Newark on Trent, Notts. Marshall, Mary Ann. Daughter, aged 5, Scholar - Bn. Heanor, Derbys. Marshall, Annie Marie(a)? Daughter, aged 3 - Bn. Heanor, Derbys. Marshall, Edith Alice. Daughter, aged 1 - Bn. Heanor, Derbys. Marshall, Bryan. Brother, aged 16? Coal miner - Bn. East Leek, Leicestershire. There's quite a large number of 'Marshalls' living in Heanor today, but one in particular still lives on Loscoe Rd; towards Wellington St; Could this be 'The Pines' or 'The River' area? Azzabuv. |

The Pines/The River
replied on: 2/23/2005 6:22:17 PM Peter, i've sent the 'The Pines'/The River' page to Robert, to see what he can make of it. Half the time it looks as if it could be 'Pines' and the other half of the time 'River'. Did those Enumerators have to buy their own pen nibs, or were they given to them free? The Smalley Enumerator looks like he's got the cheapest nib AND been sucking on the golden liquid bottle. Disgusting. Azzabuv. |

The River
replied on: 2/23/2005 6:49:33 PM I think it's the Pines, but I can see The River too. The Pines fits more easily as a house name too. |

The Pines/The River
replied on: 2/24/2005 1:48:13 PM The latter sounds like the clarification we needed and a Marshall still lives in the Loscoe Rd; - Wellington St; area......if that's a tie? A pity in a way though, 'The River' sounded more intriguing? Azzabuv. |
