replied on: 2/22/2005 1:10:26 PM Hi, Philfred. Yes, you're correct. It stood just above the present day 'Country Park Tavern', but on the opposite side of the road. Just above Old Cricks, as you say. Near the bottom of today's Thorpehill Drive. On second reflection, on the map it appears to be spread across both sides of the bottom of Thorpehill Drive. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 2/23/2005 4:47:18 PM I'll have to disagree with you, Azzabuv (though I think I know what you're saying). The "original" Marlpool was on Ilkeston Road, near the juntion with Breach Road. The Marl Pool, from which the village got its name. But I accept that Marlpool had very little prior to the 20th century development, and suspect that Thorpehill Farm was very important in its immediate area. |

replied on: 2/23/2005 4:59:38 PM Yes, Robert, you're correct on the origin of the name 'Marlpool', but i was thinking of the 'new' estate, especially as far as the cemetery. The Farm's past influence seemed to spread around that part of the area - no doubt because of Cricks being there. Was Cricks purposely built, or was it a refurbished part of the old Farm? That's an interesting question waiting for an enlightning answer? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 1/2/2006 10:40:55 PM Just looking around these old posts .I can remember the men playing skittles in one of the old cow sheds which was on the other side of the lane to Crick's .The building that was called Crick's was a very old property , the farmhouse I imagine , as it was very large .I can remember us kids watching the builders fixing the guttering , about 1952 , from the comfort of an old caravan ,which I think was the home to a very large Fowkes family Marlpool estate used to be called Marlpool Farm Estate .DB |
