Smalley One Place Study
posted on: 2/22/2005 6:38:23 PM

Well, at last I am getting information together to set up a web site for Smalley, as a One Place Study.
It has started off as a site for PRs and census data but it obviously is going to need a great deal of local history as well. So, some questions....

I have 'Footsteps through Smalley' and 'Pictures of Smalley' and will of course be contacting the authors. So, does anyone have any more information about Smalley that could be used on the site? Or any family history that they would like to add?

Also, does anyone know of an active specific Smalley Local History Society?

I would very much like to involve as many groups as are interested and would, of course, give full credit for the sources.

When I eventually get up to Derby again, I will of course be looking at the Kerry Papers - the Rev. Charles Kerry will need a section of his own!

I'm not sure that its actually a Society, but there has been a group at Smalley who have published one or two other books over the years. One of our Committee members is a Smalley person, involved heavily in the village history - I shall ask her next week.

Just had a quick look. Well done!
Its on my list of favourites to go back to it later. My grandmother was Sarah Woollands from Horsley Woodhouse don't know if we are connected to the Smalley Woollands. Time will tell!

Thank you for those kind words!
As you will have seen, all of the mining data is courtesy of Robert Turton, so all the credit goes to him.

I hope to get lots more history on there eventually, as well as PRs etc.

I would be glad of anything that is offered and would paricularly like snippets/odds & ends etc about Smalley people, if anyone has anything.

1854
THE ILKESTON PIONEER
SMALLEY
THE LOCK-UP
This place of terror to the evildoer, stands where once stood, the far-famed “Dog and Duck;” – Where once drunkenness, fighting, and every species of vice were encouraged, on the same spot the perpetrators of crime, are now held in durance vile. Although this lock-up contains but one cell, it is inferior to none for convenience, cleanliness, and comfort, (if comfort can be said to exist within the strong walls of a cell or prison). It is provided with ventilators for both warm and cold air, a provision wisely made to alleviate the sufferings of its unhappy occupants, during the cold northern blasts of the winter season, and the heats of a summer’s sun. The bed, although made of that coarse material, straw, is clean, with an ample supply of good and warm covering. Much credit is due to Mr. And Mrs Wragg, for the cleanly manner in which the place is kept, and the care they have bestowed to make it what it now is.

Thanks for that Jenny, good stuff!

A William Wragg is recorded as the constable of Smalley in 1854, I wonder if he was responsible for the 'durance vile'!

I know I have come across the 'Dog & Duck' somewhere - not literally unfortunately! - but I can't remember where. Can anyone enlighten me?

It is probably mentioned in 'Smalley Remembered' but I don't have copy - can anyone help me with that too?

Dog And Duck was a pub owned by Joel Kerry, would love any info on this family. His daughter Sarah married Joseph Bowler, and went to NZ.

Joel born 8 September 1771 d. 22 May 1847. His daughter Sarah b. 16 March 1810, d 18 Feb 1880 Masterton New Zealand. She married Joseph Bowler 29 July 1845 in Smalley Derbyshire. He was born 1810? Would love to find this Joseph Bowler family, I expect he is in the Heanor area. He was married to Hannah Boden on the 5th April 1836, but she died 1844, and he married Sarah Kerry, before leaving for NZ in 1850. I understand his father was also a Joseph Bowler, and went with them. He had a brother William, who actually stood in parliment in NZ.

I have Joel Kerry as a 'taylor' on the 1801 census and in the Glovers directory of 1829. Is there a date for Joel at the Dog & Duck?

Hello all,

My Smalley OPS is running well on
http://www.patrisiacarrington.dsl.pipex.com/smalleyops.html
but now I am running out of 'history' items, so I am looking at the pedigrees of Smalley people.

I am in the process of updating the KERRY pedigree which is on the site, as is the CARRINGTON line.
From these, I am using the other familes data that occurs in there, and adding to them using PRs, census data and local history, etc.

So far I have almost completed the HALLSWORTH and WOOLLANDS lines; ROE and CRESSWELL have been started, though the latter is causing problems as they seem to have originated in Denby.

I hope to start on WOOLLEY; KYTE; RATCLIFFE; MARTIN; BRENTNALL; BOOTH, and WIDDOWSON before too long.

So if you have any connection with any Smalley families, do get in touch with me.
Any Smalley history items still welcomed!

Patrisia

I am having difficulty e mailing you through your link on the Smalley One Place site.

I have a link to the Kerry family in Smalley. Sarah Kerry (Born 1808) is my Great, Great, Great, Great Grandmother. I am currently tracing my family History through the WILSON line. Sarah Married Henry Wilson.

Would love to discuss further. Please let me know if you recieve this.

Many thanks

Apart from a slight glitch for 24 hours, I am happy to say that the Smalley OPS is back on line!

Just a slight change, the URL is now http://www.smalley-ops.dsl.pipex.com/

I have just uploaded the last four Smalley Village families for the time being.
Hopefully there will be more additions to the site in 2007.

May I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and kind words.
Maintaining and adding to the site can be hard work but it is rewarding to know that people find it of interest.

Best wishes to all, for Christmas and the New Year.
