replied on: 6/12/2006 12:31:39 PM Robert, Never really knew but I think they may have been area related, (Langley)Mill (Bailey) Brook ? Lea ? Vale Maybe last two as in Long (Lea) Valley (Vale) Only a guess, I was in Brook House, not bad in Athletics, poor in swimming. Our House Master was Mr Holloway. Vale House always seemed to do well at the annual sports day which were held on the Cricket Ground every June. The very last Sports Day was on Wednesday 24th June 1955.The GENT challenge cup was won by Vale House, the PURDY Champion Boy Cup was shared by 3 boys John Newton (Vale House) John Thornhill (Vale) and B.Judge of Brook House. The Trophies being named after Mr.Gent and Miss.Purdy two of our teachers. They were presented by the Rev.G.William Jones the Vicar of St.Andrews. PaulR |

replied on: 7/5/2006 11:09:15 AM Any ex aldercar school kids here will remember the 4 houses, manifold (green) Beresford (blue) Dove (red) and monsal (yellow)? I've got a theory that all the misfits, weirdos and general rebels were chucked into manifold. I was in it and during my time 1974-9 it was consistently the worst in terms of winning trophies, team points and just about anything. Im unsure as to why, I cherish the idea that we were above such childish and pointless competition but it may have been because we all just thick and idle. I know I didnt give a monkeys anyway despite being reasonably intelligent. Well, by Langley Mill standards anyway..... Im still sure that we were streamed into houses as nearly all the posh types that went to university or who had parents as governers ended up in monsal. The real plebs were always in beresford or so it seemed to me. Dove seemed to be the utterly nondescript sort of kids. Any thoughts? |

replied on: 7/5/2006 1:11:03 PM It's ages since I've been called a real pleb!!!!! I thought the house names you have given were at Langley Mill junior, but that's probably just my lousy memory again. Personally, I could never get wound up about scoring points either, possibly because I hardly ever scored any. I certainly never got any for sport, but probably got the odd one for classroom work. |

replied on: 7/5/2006 9:34:00 PM You're thinking of the class names, all after Derbyshire place names there. There was Ashbourne, Matlock, Bakewell and err...I cant think of any more! |

replied on: 7/17/2006 12:06:26 PM The four houses named after Derbyshire Dales were only started about 1962, shortly after Dr Farmer-Little became Headmaster. Before that there were six houses. Two I can remember are: Cheshire (red)[named after Leonard Cheshire]. Castle Oriel (Yellow) The other four colours were: brown, blue, green (of course) and white. Can any readers remembewhat these othere four houses were called? [Entry edited on 24-07-06, I found an old exercise book, on which I had written "Cheshire (Red)". My original entry had cheshire as brown, which was wrong.] Wesley |

replied on: 10/22/2006 7:27:41 PM Sprocket already named a few, but here's my recollections from Langley Mill Infant School (Sedgewick Street) between 1978 and 1810. Mrs Riley (headteacher) Mrs Wain (secretary, still in the local area) Mrs Brown (taught the "top class" retired shortly after I think. Lovely teacher.) Miss Mills (Taught what was then reception class, long brown hair and seemed pretty strict) Mrs Stevenson (played the picno, very pretty with brown hair, I think she had a maternity leave during this time) Miss Bottomley...my first ever teacher. She was so young and pretty...I loved her to bits! Mrs Price was a dinner lady...I thought she was wonderful. Her daughter turned out to be a friend of my big sister's. My friends and I went on "an adventure" to Mrs Price's house one summer holiday...she didn't mind that pupils turned up at the door! |

replied on: 10/22/2006 8:56:55 PM Hi, new to all this but I remember lots of teachers from Aldercar circa.1971-76. I remember all those posted from my era. some of these I have listed may have been mentioned before, but here are a few I dont remember seeing on the posts. Mr Gough (drama) Great hippy type bloke who hated Ripper nearly as much as the kids. Mrs Dyson (science) Mrs Holden (english) very freindly with Mr. Beasley (maths) as I recall. Mrs Renshaw (english) Mrs williamson? (geography Mrs Eno (music) Miss Shimmin (probably married now) Mr Gadsby. (metalwork) poor bloke died while I was there. Anyone remember his "cuffs" round the back of your head? Miss Lund ( p.e.) Mr Hall (p.e.) Also had an R.E. teacher cant remember her name but we called her MAZDA (light of the world) on top of that we had a french student teacher for a while in 72/73 I think her name was Madmoiselle Lovalent very pretty girl as I remember. The amount of times she sent lads out of the classroom to wait for Mr Williams (Ripper), there was hardly any of us left in it. |

replied on: 10/22/2006 9:05:18 PM Elnor St infants , early 50's , had a school attendance officer --- 6 feet plus and bald as a boiled egg -- named Mr.Trueblood ?? He came to visit you if you were absent from school. Would be a busy man in today's world !! Langley Mill Boys ( now Chris Roads cars ) the unforgetable Spike Perkins -- I was also in Mr Websters religious instruction class ,when the police came in and arrested him. He refused to do his national service ( it was compulsary at that time )on grounds of him being a concientious objector. I don't think he ever returned to L Mill school again . |

replied on: 11/17/2006 7:20:19 PM Miss Lund..yes remember her. Still a miss I imagine as she was 'not the marrying kind' if you get me. Miss Shimmin-an odd name, she was from the isle of man I recall. Mrs Williamson-or was she a miss too? Tall thin blonde haired plain woman. Probably from the isle of dogs. Ripper always had a thing about Miss Holota, the german teacher, he was never out of her classroom at any rate. Ah, happiest days of your life-if you were a sado-masochist. Thoroughly hated the whole experience and have never ever ever wished I was back. |

replied on: 11/17/2006 7:23:02 PM I would like to say that despite my own thorough detestation of Aldercar school i always had a good time at the junior school when i was there. A decent place with a human being as a head, RHB Hampson. |
