replied on: 3/2/2006 10:06:57 PM Sue How come you've got G.R.Dickie leaving in the 1960's? He was still there in the 70's when I went. (Or did he go and come back again?) And did you spot that you were sitting a couple of seats away from him at the Society meeting last month? Also Wolf Liebeschuetz was there. |

replied on: 3/3/2006 12:13:38 PM Robert, I think Mr Dickie must have left and returned later-I thought it was strange -as I know he was there in 1959-and also in 1964.-and his wife taught at the school later too. The info is from The Heanorian Oct 1962 (only year it was published in Oct -I think!!) It states " At Easter we said good bye to Mr G.R.Dickie and Mr Lindley who had taught Mathematics here for 6 and 4 years respectively. Both left to take up posts of greater responsibility, Mr Dickie at Tupton Hall Grammar School, Clay Cross." I didn't notice him (or Lieb) at the meeting -too focussed on your talk!!!! if he attends again at least we can ask him!! |

I don't know how he came to visit our meeting - he didn't sit with Wolf, so obviously didn't come with him. I shall let you know if it looks like he is going to come again. |

replied on: 3/5/2006 3:34:51 PM I remember seeing the airraid shelters, or at least one of them, on the playing fields. It was blocked off in someway or other otherwise I would have had a look round. The occasion was some football game or other - could have been a testimonial for a Heanor player and they were playing against a rest of the world team, as far as I remember - I was very young at the time - went with the elder brother. Did this game ever happen? Or am I imagining things again?! |

replied on: 1/12/2008 9:52:20 PM Frontcentre mentioned Miss Webb -found this in R&H 25 Nov 1960 Miss Ellen Harrison Webb of Veryan, Denby Lane, Codnor,who was made an M.B.E. in the last Queen's birthday honours list received her award at the hands of the Queen at Buckingham Palace, on Tuesday. Miss Webb, a former senior mistress at Heanor Grammar School was a teacher at the school for many years,and retired about 10 years ago. She has a long record of service in the Red Cross Society and was Divisional President of the Heanor Detatchment and Commandant of Heanor Division. Miss Webb is the only person in Derbyshire to be awarded the Red Cross certificate and Badge of Honour Class 2. |

replied on: 8/2/2008 8:38:34 AM 1974 - Geography was Mr.Griffin - also an excellent table tennis player, taught me more on the table tennis than he did at geography. Can anyone remember the english teacher at the time, a rather short lady but great teacher. |

That said, the vast majority left long before that age, and many at the earliest possible opportunity, though all were expected to stay till the age of 16. School Leaving Age was: 10 - 1880 11 - 1893 12 - 1899 14 - 1918 15 - 1947 16 - 1972 |
