Does any member know anything about the history of number 16, East St; such as past occupants or any tale associated with it from around the very early 1940s?
I have a genuine reason for asking.

I ask my mother this morning, and she said there used to be a man and his wife lived there . He was called Joe, she's trying to remember his last name. His wife was very tall and blonde she thinks.But across road there used to be a family called Carps, if you could find any of that family maybe they would know or maybe I could ask the guy that bought the house to look on the deeds. Be back soon.

The Oxley name has galvanised the two functioning brain cells into action. I used to knock about with Andrew Oxley for a while in the late 50s, both of us around 10 years old. The family had visitors from the USA for a couple of weeks. I cannot remember much more other than Andrew's dad might have been a baker.

regards, Phil

The two Families which you mention ring a bell. I used to know Billy Roe, from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. At that latter time he would be aged about 17. The Family lived on Fairview, Heanor at that time.

I also knew Terry (Tid) Oxley in the mid-1950s and onward. That Family lived down Langley at that time period. When he got married, his wife's parents ran the Expresso Bar on Mundy St; next to the jitty which took you towards the old police station, across from the Technical College.
It's all interesting info.

Trying to work out the geography of the Expresso Bar, which was before my time. Do you mean that it was on Godfrey Street, which had the track running down to the old Police Station? If it was on Mundy Street, I don't see how your comments fit.

Just thought I would put these names on to see if it would jog anyone’s memory about some of the people who lived in Marlpool.

Barm Brown use to sell barm, Capwells chip shop,Bellamies (think it’s correct)Billy Rice,Billy Naylor,Edie Storers corset shop,Fowlers chip shop,Joe Buxton,Bowers fruit shop,CouncilorBrown,MableSims,Nicholsons. If you know anyone maybe you could put a name to his or her trades or shops that I have not mentioned.
And if anyone can explain to me about A picture I saw once, outside Bellamies house I could see an chain or something, like they used to use in lifting boxes or barrels.I know that Harry bellamy used to be the compare at Marlpool club when it was a tin shack.

Yes, Robert, you're correct. The Expresso Bar was situated on Godfrey St;
But it wasn't my fault, it was the key-board's.

Hi, Amy.
Did your Grandmother live at that same address during 1939-40? If she did, has she any memories of the Ratcliffe's who lived at number 16, East Street at that time. I believe it was in rented accomodation at that address.
Sometime later in 1940, they moved to Langley.

Handsome and debonair with it tooooooo. (a BIG sighing Tooooooo). Ah life - LUCKY mirrors...........
