It is oblong in shape and its sides are approximately 4 feet in height. Its heavy stone lid is loose. As youngsters, a group of us would sometimes enter the Churchyard from the small lane, which runs between the old houses and the edge of the Cemetery, shove the lid partly to one side and peer inside. In the corner of the tomb nearest the Church, appeared to be a square cut hole, approximately a foot and a half square. After a few minutes, we would vacate the scene rapidly, because of the (no doubt imagined) noise coming from the small hole in the tomb's corner. Does anyone have any historical information concerning this empty tomb I.E. the name of its original occupant and the date of construction? Azzabuv. |

Heanor St. Lawrence - Empty Tomb, etc
replied on: 5/4/2006 10:15:51 AM I had the opportunity to climb the tower on May Day. It was an interesting experience - dont think I ever did it as a child. Dont think I had ever been inside the church since it was re-done after the fire and thats a while ago now. What really upset me was finding the baptismal font had been cemented onto a memorial stone, covering a large portion of the inscription. That just happens to be one of my relatives. It doesnt show any respect. I cant imagine what prompted that descision and it has no regard for the history of the area. Just had to get it off my chest. FC |

Heanor St. Lawrence - Empty Tomb, etc
replied on: 9/6/2006 11:59:16 PM Hi, I recently visited this church, where in 1977 I had come across my ancestors tombstone propped up against a wall along with many others. It was in perfect condition with the lettering deeply carved and easy to read - I was thrilled to have stumbled across it by accident. Now there is absolutely no trace whatsoever of this tombstone and I was quite disgusted to see how what tombstones were left were hidden, neglected and just placed anywhere. As you say no respect. Thank goodness Memorial Inscriptions have been done by the DFHS. I too needed to get this off my chest!!! CS |

Heanor St. Lawrence - Empty Tomb, etc
replied on: 11/14/2006 11:52:00 PM Hi there, sorry I did not think to see if anyone had replied to my message. Well my ancestor was Robert Shorthose who died 9th December 1806 aged 38 - that was what was carved so beautifully on the gravestone but now there is absolutely no trace of it. Four generations of the family have been linked to this Church, so much so, that I felt I had to contribute to one of the new roof tiles some 20 years ago when it was being funded! According to the Memorial Inscriptions there should also be a fragment of a stone for Sarah Shorthose (his baby daughter) who died around 1800 but I have personally never seen this. If you have any more info I would be glad to hear it. Thanks Christina |

replied on: 11/16/2006 12:28:33 AM Hi Tempus, Yes I had seen that item on Ebay and am keeping an eye out for it!! the Shorthose in question is indeed my Gt,Gt,Gt Grandfather's brother John Henry Shorthose. The gravestone in St Lawrence's which I was referring to earlier would be his grandfather Robert! Thanks for letting me know though, I do appreciate all you eagle eyes out there in Heanor - isn't the internet a wonderful media. |

Heanor St. Lawrence - Empty Tomb, etc
replied on: 11/19/2006 8:33:36 PM Sorry about the delay in responce, had a bit of a silly shift at work and the church hall was in use on Saturday so today was the first day that I've had the chance to check out my theory. When the Church was demolished and rebuilt I believe the remaining grave markers had to be taken down for the cranes etc to be able to take down roof timbers etc. Most of this was unavoidable due to the subsidence meaning that Sissons literally described the Church being held together by the iron ties, a large proportion of the church had to be demolished carefully to avoid most of it ending up in the road in one fell swoop. Due to the landscaping that took place after this the majority of the stones remaining were either ones that were already in poor condition due to the stones used and so incorporated into the landscaping or if in good condition (mostly the slate ones due to their hardwearing nature) were either put at the edge of the new landscaped area or were incorporated elsewere in the building. Robert's grave is still intact and one of the ones used as part of the new building. From the main entrance of the Church (at the tower) go right along the south (road) side of the outside of the Church, when you get to the East end of the Church you will see what is left of the old East end "left to create the illusion of a ruinous form to a pleasing effect" (God help us for what was considered "pleasing effect" in the 70-80's) Follow the weelchair ramp and you will see a small iron gate that lets you into the area between the old and new East wall. From the gate move to your right so that you are against the old East wall, Robert's gave is now the 2nd grave up in front of you on the ground. Please excuse the mess, amoungst the other vandelism we have suffered they have knocked a lot of the plaster off the wall and ripped up some plants - plans are ahead to clean up and repair / plant in the warmer months. Most of the graves there are the ones that were in the best conditions, had good carving or were important historically (i.e. Howetts and Wooleys). I'm hoping that once we have the archives online and start cross referancing church records with the census' etc to put photographs of the graves linked to the people in the archives.. but thats a big project still WAY in the future... especially as Matlock are dragging their heels about giving me some of the information I've requested. Hmmm... think this might be the longest of my posts. Hope it helps |

Heanor St. Lawrence - Empty Tomb, etc
replied on: 2/4/2007 4:48:32 PM Hi Azzabuv Finally caught the tomb with the light in the right position this morning. The Tomb was for what looks like Wm (William) and Mary I thing their last name is Hardy, but it looks like it either says "Here lie the bodys of Wm and Mary Hardy found..." or "Here lie the bodys of Wm and Mary Hardyfound..." sorry, not sure which. Would be worth you either talking to Winifred or the Derbyshire ancestral group to get access to the records they hold for a William and Mary who died pre 1869. Hope it helps |
