replied on: 3/7/2005 3:05:36 PM It's hard to be sure. There's only two addresses at Well's Terrace. It comes after Plumptre Terrace (which in turn has come after all the Cromford Road entries), and is followed by Peartree Cottage, Aldercar, and then by "Erewash Side." After that the enumerator leaps over to Milnhay for a single "outlying house". I wouldn't rule out it being the farmhouse at the top of Plumptre Road, but really can't be certain. |

replied on: 3/7/2005 6:20:26 PM Thank-you-I don't think it was the actual farmhouse, but remembering from childhood days when I used to visit that farm-the farmhouse had attached to it a couple of terraced houses-so maybe that was Wells terrace. It would figure, as the occupant in 1891 was a retired farmer-in 1881 he lived on Cromford Rd, but only 2 houses away from Plumptre Terrace. The occupant's daughter was Lucy Mason-school mistress-maybe at Aldercar Infants School???? Wonder if she'll appear on "Teachers" topic??? |

replied on: 3/7/2005 7:56:06 PM Victoria Terrace is not a problem at all. If you turn into Cromford Road off Station Road, it is immediately on your left. It is now just an entry to lead to the back of a couple of shops, but before the expansion of G.R.Turners it was a full blown street. Up until a few years ago, the street name was still up there on the side of the shop at the bottom of the street, but (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think it is there anymore. |

replied on: 3/7/2005 10:32:12 PM Thanks Robert, One other small enquiry, fathers occupation is listed as Railway wagon painter. Do you think he would have been employed by G.R.Turner or the Railway? |

replied on: 3/8/2005 11:49:24 AM Robert-was Victoria Terrace the wide entrance between what was (in 1950-60's) the fish and greengrocery shop and Basil Bottomley's grocery shop? I can't remember what is there now-must go and have a look. I am enquiring as an aquaintance's parents kept both of those shops in 1940-early 50's. |

replied on: 3/9/2005 7:20:32 AM Yes. I'm not sure when the houses were pulled down. By my day, and still now, if you look up the gap between the two shops, you can only go a short distance before coming to the wall of Turner's, but this was a later extension to their works. |
