I am mainly interested in when Sid Hogg took over the licence for the beeroff on the top of Loscoe Hill from his dad Bob, when Bob took it on and did bob at some time keep the Gate Inn at the rear of the beeroff. |

replied on: 3/10/2005 5:41:09 PM Welcome to the site - I hope you will be a regular contributor! You don't mention the approximate year, but, as long as it was between 1920 (for some premises a little earlier) and 1978, then the document you want is in the County Record Office at Matlock. It is called the "A Division Register of Licensed Victuallers," and its reference number is D3376 Box 80/1. |

replied on: 3/14/2005 7:27:48 PM I'm not sure of the dates, hence the question but the bits of information that I have point to the fact that Sid and his wife Alice lived at the beeroff in the mid 1930's until about the late 1950's although Sids mum and dad Robert and Elizabeth lived with them until their deaths in the mid 1940's and 1950's respectively. When Robert and Elizabeth took over the shop I'm not sure although I have a battered pewter tankard stamped with the seal of the weights and measures people and each stamp dated 1890 through to 1900, I think this may have been theirs and was replaced when the handle broke, as to any other information I am totally in the dark. |

replied on: 3/14/2005 10:15:03 PM In that case the dates will definitely be recorded in the document listed above - if you live relatively locally, take a trip to Matlock and the County Record Office. If you're a new visitor, they are very helpful (and since you know the reference number of what you want to see, it won't take you long at all). |

replied on: 3/18/2005 8:05:08 PM Thanks for your response. Stella Hogg was my aunt she eventually married Dennis Fearn of Beeston Notts, they had one child, a son David who lives in Paignton Devon. Stella died of cancer in the first week in March 1993, Dennis died of a broken heart two or three days later and they had a double cremation at Bramcote. |

replied on: 4/14/2005 1:37:26 PM I remember Margaret, Cameofield. Yes she was thrown and killed near the trainline crossing, near the MGO Bus Depot. But for some reason, i've always remembered that year as 1958. I could be wrong though, but not certain. I've often remembered that incident over the years. How many remember her now and the accident which caused her death? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 4/14/2005 11:41:28 PM I believe she was recently married at the time, but don't quote me on it. If she was, i suppose one of her Grandmothers was named Wood. Mind you, being upto the neck in the Hardy/Wragg/Stirland quicksand, i couldn't swear on it now-adays. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 4/24/2005 11:05:34 PM What little I know of Margaret was that she was indeed married and had given birth to a child just a few weeks before her death, a daughter I think. Her husband was very worried about the stallion that she was riding and had warned her not to ride it as she was not yet strong enough to control it. Apparently a train sounded its whistle at the station, the horse was somewhere near the church and bolted in the direction of Heanor, Margaret tried valliently to control it but was thrown, I think into the path of an oncoming vehicle. |

replied on: 4/25/2005 1:24:22 PM Aye, we have two locations now, where that tragic accident occurred, Cameo. The Langley Mill train station and the railway crossing near the MGO bus depot. I heard the same story though, but i heard a train was standing at the closed barriers and tooted its whistle loudly as she rode slowly over the lines and the horse went insane with fear. If the latter IS true, could that sudden high-pitched, shrieking whistle have been thought of as a bit of 'fun' on someone's part? Any third parties welcome. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 5/8/2005 7:20:21 PM Hi Jenny, sorry for the delay in answering, thanks for the information, most of which I already knew as a result of a visit to the submarine museum at Gosport about five years ago. Ron Hall was my dads cousin but he had not told me much about Ron except that when I was ten he took me to the war memorial at Portsmouth and we hunted through the names until we found Rons entry. I did not know about the R&H News articles so thanks again for the info. |
