A Garden Find
posted on: 3/16/2005 9:53:39 PM

An unusual query from a resident of Nook End Road, Heanor, received via the main website:

"While digging in the garden this weekend we unearthed a large piece of dressed stone, bearing the inscription H 17 W + A 99.

Any ideas as to what this may be from? Approx size 48 inches x 12 inches."

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Don't say we have our own budding 'Oak Island' mystery, like the inscribed stone there? - or could it more probably be a water-pipe/gas pipe marker/indicator which was once connected to the former Nook End terraced houses and large rear open square which once stood there?

The stone's overall height now suggests it wasn't a water/gas-Main indicator, unless the bottom half was buried for the obligatory 2 feet in depth?

Robert, can the finder detail the cut wording style on the stone, such as historical or resembling modern letters?
At the moment it could proove interesting in a historical and other ways.
