Another name that came to mind in the small hours.I seem to be thinking rag and bone man, got a touch of that which killed the cat. I am not sure if the name has been mentioned elsewhere in the forum.

Must go time for smoething to before going to "work"

In 1958 my girlfriend from Derby used to stay for the weekends with my family in Thompson Street. The first night she was there we were all sitting together talking and round about midnight in walked Harry (we never needed to lock doors then, did we?)he turned to my Mum and said,"da ya want owt duck" Who's that? said Brenda,I replied "it's the greengrocer" "what at this time of night" she said "yes and he's a bit early to-night" my Dad said, jokingly. Anyone who knew Harry genuinely would say he was a loveable rogue,he had a heart of gold and always had a smile.

I remember him with his horse and cart. One day he came to see my Dad to ask if he would teach him to drive a lorry.Dad asked the question, when? As soon as possible, I've bought a new Austin flat bed and it's gone in for some sign writing and a cover being fitted. Dad said O.K. but you'll have to take a test to get a driving licence, "I won't" says Harry, I've got one but I've never drove before. Dad accepted the challenge and taught him to drive, and then the lorry arrived, sure enough, brand new, sign written H.D.Poundall,Greengrocer and Fruiterer,Dunstead Road,Aldercar. He used this lorry for years until it was dropping to bits.He would always start his rounds from the top of the street so that he could coast down rather than use petrol.

Harry lived with his Mum on Upper Dunstead a little way down from Ormonde Street on the left hand side, when he died (as you've mentioned)it was said he was a very wealthy man (talking millionaire status)He owned all the land which was the old brickyard, which is now a new estate,he also owned several acres on Cromford Road to the left of the old coal wharf and behind the Durham Ox.He had some kind of smallholding there and had sheds where I first saw battery hens,I was told (I don't know how true, that he had been offered the old Brinsley Pit hills, which he bought and was therefore the owner of the land which was eventually purchased for the new Langley Mill bypass).

In 1961 he said he had always wanted to go to the Motor-Show at Earls Court in London. Dad and I decided to take him.I went to pick Harry up from home and he came out, dressed as always in his working clothes, cap, old trousers, coat and shoes complete with string shoe laces.I don't think he'd ever been much further than Heanor and when we got on the road,he was so excited, just like a little lad going on his holidays. When we got to the M.1.at Rugby he could'nt believe it was real,(all that road and only a few cars and lorries.Things have'nt changed much)and then when we drove down Edgware Road towards Marble-Arch he was speechless.

At Earls-Court he was saying which car's he would like (he could have bought any)when we arrived at the Rolls-Royce stand a rather well-dressed man came to usher us away,Harry was not too pleased, and with his hand in his back pocket, turned to the man and said "al hay one for every dee" on this note the man changed his attitude but Harry turned round to us and said "c'mon youth wail goo an luk at somat else" putting his fistful of cash back in his pocket.Something I've never forgot.
Good old Harry.
