Cream Horns. Cream Puffs - the large golden coloured balls of light fluffy pastry, filled with delicious soft cream. They were worth a threpny-bit anyday, from the good old 'unofficial' school tuckshop at the bottom of Loscoe Road.

Suddenly, for no reason I remembered a variety of sweets sold on the market years ago; 'roast duck, green peas and new potatoes'. The duck was a duck shaped red gum and the others were candy, round green peas and potatos coloured and shaped appropriately.

This forgotten food-stuff came on the Doctor's orders.
For the massive swelling of the throat, caused by the once well known 'Derbyshire Throat' syndrome, take a thin slice of dry bread, doubled-over as a sandwich and liberally covered in cotton-wool inside of it and take gaggingly, two or three times a day. The strange thing about this, is that, after a pain-filled short while, it actually seemed to work.

rainbow kali and those white sherbet dabs with a lollipop.

Rainbow crisps - sort of like better tasting rice crispies. You got a bagful for 1d or 2d

coconut mushrooms - they aint wot they used to be.

Steak & kidney pie. That slime like pastry that tasted so good.

Blanc mange

Why do we let ourselves get so busy we cant cook some of the stuff listed here.

Anybody still use the old Bero recipe book. Lot of stuff still on there.

I still have an old Be-ro book, which we turn out for all the old staples. It is extremely well thumbed! I wouldn't be without it!

I still use blancmange when I make a trifle (my wife doesn't like trifle, so it's my job - I do a lot of cooking anyway!)

I prefer the taste of my home-made steak and kidney pudding compared with the one you describe! But has anyone else found that buying fresh kidney is getting increasingly difficult?

And as for your comment regarding people having no time for cooking - I work full time, I have two teenage kids who regard me as their private taxi, I have an active hobby life (in other words, I'm always doing something to do with Heanor's history!), but I still find time to cook a real meal most days of the week.

(Don't get me onto my hobby horse!)

God Robert you are going back some are you not,be-ro book.i remember those, really good books they are.i read an article about the mrs beeton or beaton cooking books, where she never made a penny from her recipes because she died early and her husband sold the rights.the said company used any recipe and credited it with her name to sell it long after her death, in fact it was a while before people knew she had died because it would have hit sales.

Think I have an incarnation of the Bero book with a 2000 date. Not all that far to go back!

Just to make Robert jealous-I have 5 Be Ro cook books-earliest 1940s -sepia print!(it has my name and address written in it in large childish writing-address is Langley Mill Notts The World the universe-I made it known exactly where I was just in case I lost it!!!!
Wonderful recipes-for making something out of practically nothing.
One recipe is for "Frizets"-just flour, milk and a pinch of salt-mixed together and spoonsfuls dropped into bacon fat-fried till browned-they were lovely-but you don't get bacon fat that is fit to fry anything in nowadays!
Or frying pans blackened by the heat of the fire-never to be washed-much better than "non stick"

My Be-ro book is the 37th edition, Ive got a few cook books but always go back to the be-ro book!
Mondays was washday, so it was chips cooked in the black pan on the open fire with mushy peas and one slice of meat from the sunday joint,Tuesday meat and potato pie with the rest.

For real bacon fat (not water) visit a local real butcher and buy dry cured bacon. The temptation is always to go for the easiest and rely on the freezer and microwave. With my lifestyle I am one of the biggest offenders but on my days off I try to do things like me mam did. I can burn/incinerate/undercook a meal with the best and thats only a salad.
