Jimmy was killed in the slurry that came down from the dirt hill for Coppice Colliery. At the end of Osbornes Pond there were two streams that fed in to the pond. The land between the two was always called the island. I cannot remember exactly why Jimmy went over the slurry. This always looked quite solid but I never went too close to it. This happened in the mid to late 50s. Jimmy's mam never really came to terms with Jimmys death. She would often go in to the shop to get a bit of ham for Jimmy. She would get it in to her head that he was coming home that afternoon. regards Phil |

replied on: 4/10/2005 5:06:47 PM That's a sad story, Phil, for such a tragic event to happen in such a nice Wilderness as the area once was. Why did he do it, perhaps the excitement engulved him of, as it was then, a 'Vast' untamed Wilderness, stretching from the edge of Marlpool to Mapperley and beyond, where a lad could go anywhere and do anything he wanted to, without a 'Yea' or Nay' from anyone, with no hint of a confined, commercialised Park in sight. It was the feeling of pure freedom. I used to go down their regular as a pre-teen in the early 1950s. The feeling of exploratory euphoria knew no bounds. Perhaps this was his undoing? If 'It' was there, - climb it, scale it, wade it or jump it or whatever had to be done. Did his Mother ever come to terms with her loss. Or was she stuck for years with that burden? I know the feeling she had. It's a long, lingering, forlorn hope/wish that that particular day ALL will come right at last. Of course, it never does and some people just can't accept this situation and the routine lasts for ever. Terrible. In short, it's a B***^&@. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 4/14/2005 11:51:09 AM If my memory serves me well, Jimmy Wilson had a couple of older brothers and either they or their friends had made some kind of rope swing. Jimmy wanted to have a go on it, but had been told he was too small. When the older ones went home for tea Jimmy apparantly decided to have a go on it and fell.I think he died in the ambulance on the way to hospital. I know it had a terrible affect on the whole family-his Mum -a very small lady-always wore black after Jimmy's death and used to wander around "in a world of her own". I think one of Jimmy's brothers went in the ambulance with him and it affected him quite badly. I don't suppose any of the family ever recovered completely from such a sad and tragic accident.I remember being shown a photograph of Jimmy-a little blonde haired boy-he would have been any Mother's pride and joy. |

replied on: 4/14/2005 8:22:08 PM The photo of Jimmy did him proud. He did have blonde hair that anyone would have been proud to have. He always had a smile on his face and seemed to have a happy go lucky attitude. regards Phil |

replied on: 11/7/2005 5:13:38 PM I used to know the Wilson family ,somewhere I have a photo of my old man having a pint with Tommy the dad in the John Warren old pub .Elsie and Tommy had sons Johnny ,Eddie and then of course Jimmy ,and also a daughter Mary .Before they moved to marlpool, they used to live in the cottages next to Codnor /Waingroves common at Codnor .To get on to the common we all used to run into their house climb on the sink and jump through the back window on to the common . We were told or thought that Jimmy had fallen through the hard crust on the pit tip in to the smouldering waste beneath .poor soul !whatever . Eddie stills lives next to the shops at Roper Ave. DB |
