Think back to the 50s Sunday evenings and Heanor Market Place. Four MGO single deckers parked up, with A, B, C or D displayed on the front. Nothing displayed on the destination board, pay halfcrown (12.5p)per person and the bus leaves when all the seats are taken. Destination unknown but at least two stops at pubs are guaranteed.

What a way to spend a summers evening.

I was telling my son about these trips only the other week.I can picture them now on the Market Place with a board in front with a general description of the trip offered. Like you say it always meant a stop at a pub, a bottle of orange pop and a bag of crisps.

The 6 P.M. Mystery Tour. I used to like 'em best when they headed for the Peak District. A bit further out, which did cut the amount of time spent in which ever pub.

I remember once, we ended up at the UFO Capital of Derbyshire - Bonsall. There were several other coaches parked and by the time i'd fought my way through the throng at the bars and sat down to relish the pint, there was the bus driver yelling for "All aboard".
Had to call it quits, eventually. I mean, you can't go leaving half filled glasses of ale all over the place?

Do they still operate something similar today?

I don't know if the Sunday trips are still in operation today-but some bus company's still do Mystery weekends-they are usually excellent value for money.I do know of an elderly gentleman from Mapperley village who went on his annual Sabbatical to Skegness and booked himself on a mystery trip from there-the mystery destination was Shipley Country Park! So he went home , watered his garden, had a cup of tea and then boarded the coach back to Skeg!!

My father used to take the Sunday 'Derbyshire Tours' from Ilkeston MGO. My job was to count the passengers as they boarded. If less than half a bus load arrived then the trip was cancelled however I do recall on some occasions a couple of vehicles being required. I also remember the pub stop and really looked forward to the shandy (if I was lucky) and a bag of crisps with a little packet of salt in them. My father always took his PSV badge off before going in the pub as it was frowned upon to wear it on licensed premises.

Hi, PaulC. Those crisps with that much sought for little twist of salt in its blue, shiny paper wrapper made the snack. If someone launched such salt wraps in their crisps today - a fortune awaits.

Did your Dad ever take Peak trips from Heanor Market, say around the early 1960s?

Fraid not. My father only did his driving from Ilkeston. He was employed as a coachbuilder at Langley Mill and did the driving bit as a form of overtime at the weekends and some nights. He has just retired after 50 years service and probably mended the buses on a Monday morning after the tight lanes found on the tours the day before!
