(If not, click here to read it - it is really quite good.) The annoying part about this item, excellent though it is, is that I have no idea what it is advertising! What and where was the Crystal Palace at Marlpool? Every other premises mentioned I know about, but not the key one! |

In Kellys there is a section for Public Houses (which names pub and innkeeper) and a section for beerhouse keepers which just lists the keepers name.Usually the Beerhouses were off licences, but by finding the keepers name on census returns I have found occasionally the name of the Beerhouse to be a pub-which was only licensed to sell beer.I'll have to put my Sherlock Holmes hat on!!! |

What the Crystal Palace was, though, is a different matter - I wonder whether it could have been a club of some description. replied on: 5/3/2005 3:06:33 PM Well done Peter-you beat me to the Hat!!! 1881 Bulmers shows John Alton as Innkeeper at White Lion, but 1881 census states Charles Alton as innkeeper there?(and William Boam as innkeeper Queens Head.) A couple of doors away from the White Lion on 1881 census is Thomas Butler age 32 brickmaker and family (one of his sons is Albert Butler age 11) 1887 Kellys shows Thomas Butler as keeper of White Lion-so it seems his son Albert later took it over from his father? The Black Horse in Mapperley was well known in 1800's(and early 1900's I think)for the large greenhouses in the garden (which is now the car park). They grew exotic plants and ferns and held shows etc there. Apparantly Squire Mundy used to visit the greenhouses. Maybe it was a fashion for pubs to have greenhouses full of exotic plants? Maybe this "fashion" was the fore runner to Flower and vegetable shows being held at Public Houses. I remember 1950's Railway Tavern Langley Mill used to have a huge Flower show annually-they erected a marquee on what is now the car park. I used to go around the area selling tickets for it, as a neighbour was on the commitee -and was very proud of his crysanthemums! |

Ripley & Heanor News 18th Jan 1895 MARLPOOL Annual Social Gathering – On Monday evening about 180 persons sat down to an excellent repast in the Marlpool “Crystal Palace,” the occasion being the Annual Invite of Mr. Albert Butler, who has generously given this annual treat to his numerous friends for many years. The large glasshouse was lavishly decorated with choice ferns and plants, and lit up with numerous lanterns. A number of ladies from Heanor, Langley, and Langley Mill presided over the tables. Subsequently, a very pleasant evening was spent, dancing being indulged in, and numerous songs being contributed by Mr. A. Naylor and others. Messrs. S. Bramley (Heanor), and Downing (Marlpool), presiding at the piano. Jenny |

replied on: 5/12/2005 6:51:08 AM I think I've also found it on the 1900 OS Map. At the back of the White Lion there is a structure which is larger than the pub. The structure is marked with criss-cross diagonal lines, while buildings are shown with just single diagonal lines. Trouble is, I can't find a key to the symbols used in the 1900 map, to check out what it is. |

Naylor’s Benefit at The Crystal Palace The concert, which was held last week, at the Crystal Palace, Marlpool, was successful in every way. replied on: 9/17/2005 4:09:58 PM fascinating reading!!! thanks to Robert i've just found it. now could anyone find any info of who ran the two pubs or three pubs really,mundy arms-queens head-white lion in the 1950s and 1960s.i think someone called jess ran the white lion as i can remember going into the off sales,well the small window and getting my grandma's bottled filled with ale. |

replied on: 10/2/2005 12:42:17 PM The brain cell has been woken from its slumber. The Queens Head was in the early 60s, home to Alan Fletcher, who was at HGS. He used to live with his widowed mother in one of the terraced cottages in the grounds of Shipley Hall. His mother must have remarried and moved with family in to the Queens Head. I have an abiding memory of seeing Alan at an upstairs window doing homework, I assume. This was at the start of my evening paper round from Billy Robinsons. regards Phil |

Winfield the death took place on Sunday of Mr John Henry Winfield of the Queens Head Breach Rd Marlpool Mr Winfield who was 66 was one of the oldest Licensees in the Heanor and Ilkeston area and his death followed a long illness, borne with much patience and fortitude. Most affectionately known by his customers as “Harry” Mr Winfield was born at the “pub” of which his parents, Mr and Mrs J.H. Winfield held the Licence. He was educated at Nottingham High School and worked at J. & W. Furse Ltd Notts as an electrician and during the first world war he served as a dispatch rider. Married Maude Brown of Marlpool she died 1938, his mother retired 1923,Harry took over and retired last year the Queens Head had been in the Winfield family for over 70 years. Jenny |

R&H Oct 18th 1895 "On Wednesday evening a concert was given by the Heanor portion of the Crytal Palace Choir, under the leadership of Mr.F.Rowe, in the Weslyan schoolroom.There was a large attendance and a capital programme was well rendered. Miss Lynshaw was much applauded for her recitations. Mr J.Hancock presided at the organ. The proceeds were on behalf of the Heanor Weslyan and Park Street Primitive Methodist Bands of Hope." This makes one wonder if the Crystal Palace was some kind of host to charity workers??? |
