replied on: 11/16/2005 5:29:30 PM Transfer of licence of Public Houses R&H 13th Occtober 1893 Rays Arms Heanor - Licence transferred from H.G.Gregory to T.Butler Crystal Palace Marlpool-Licence transferred from T.Butler to A.Butler Thought this was interesting, as the Crystal Palace must have held its own licence separate to the pub. |

replied on: 11/16/2005 6:26:22 PM Sue Since the Crystal Palace was the White Lion on Breach Road, I read this find of yours as showing that the landlord then moved to the Ray's Arms, and that the names "White Lion" and "Crystal Palace" were, at that time, interchangeable. (A bit like a few pub names nowadays!) |

replied on: 11/17/2005 5:18:02 AM I think you are correct Robert, as 1895 Kellys shows A Butler at the White Lion. 1881 census also shows Thomas Butler and 11 year old son Albert Butler living a few doors away from the White Lion (previous posts) So it seems in 1893 the White Lion /Crystal Palace passed from Father to son. |

However, Santa brought me a copy of a book published in the 1970's, called "Weak I'th' Yedd: Marlpool Memories," which contains some reference to the White Lion. The author is here talking about 1910's: "Our cottage was held up on one side by a cobbler's shop, and on the other by the White Lion Inn, more popularly known as "The Glass House," though the glass had all long gone before I came upon the scene. I understand that before the '14-18 war visitors came from miles around in all manner of horse-drawn transport to relax and quench their thirsts amongst a profusion of foreign birds and florabundi...." "Some half-dozen yards from the house, and held up by the Glass House pig-cotes, were the coal house, a double seater privy...." Some useful additional stuff on the Crystal Palace there. |

replied on: 3/22/2006 3:45:57 PM Fire at the Crystal Palace R7H 20th June 1894 "Thursday evening last,a fire occured at the well knownplace of resort known as the "Crystal Palace" occupied by Mr Albert Butler. The fire broke out in the bar, on the mantlepiece which stands a large gilt mirror, covered with gauze, and on each side there is a gas bracket where was also two valuable vases.About 9 0 clock, when there was a good company present, flames were seen to be leaping from all over the chimney piece and ascending to the ceiling, which was covered with matchwood. Those present at once took active steps to extinguish the flames, and eventually proved successful, but not before considerable damage was done, as several plants were destroyed and the ceiling damaged. Prompt attention prevented what might have been a most serious conflagration. The damage is estimated at about £20, which, we are informed, is covered by insurance" A little insight into how opulent the interior must have been?? |

replied on: 4/15/2006 11:33:51 AM hi,Iceman,the White Lion was kept by harry shardlow untill his death and was then run by his wife untill the late 50,s.Stuart Holmes then took over the pub untill i think the the early 60s the pub then passed to a man named Jess Boot. The Mundy Arms was run by Barnet Williamson. a mr Coombes ran it after him and then Stuart Holmes took over from him and stuart ran it untill his death. The Queens head was kept by |

Stuart Holmes was (as I recall) the first publican in the nottingham area to introduce a buffet style salad bar at the 3 Ponds mid-late 60's. I thought it was the same Stuart who then moved to the Mundy Arms and introduced the "Steak Bar" there. |

replied on: 4/16/2006 7:48:38 PM hi Robert, the author of the book that Santa brought you was a man by the name Owen v Watson who was a miner at coppice colliery he wrote poems and stories,for the miners magazine.he was also brilliant cartoonist.does any one remember the chipshed on the land on chapel st where the hairdresser is now.the chips where fried in a big copper,wrapped in the daily herald or the mirror and they were lovely. |

replied on: 5/17/2007 1:41:21 PM it seems the crystal palace or white lion as it is known now, is boarded up and no longer doing any sales...what will become of it...more houses or maybe a rescue package to bring it back to it's once glory...very much doubt it myself and would think that the more likely option is housing.... |
