replied on: 7/6/2005 4:30:48 PM Yes, we played that too, but it certainly wasn't called Sly Fox in my day. I'm not sure, but I think we called it Mister Wolf (which seems a bit too logical to be true!) |

replied on: 7/7/2005 2:03:50 AM What about British Bulldog? Can't remember how it was played, but it always struck me as particularly dangerous. |

replied on: 7/7/2005 2:07:40 AM I've been going through this thread tonight as a preliminary to turning the discussion into an article for the Society newsletter. (So if anyone wants to add anything, please do so quickly.) Azzabuv - while you may say that the coppers today wouldn't deal with you for street football, I think when it came to "garden jumping" you'd probably be served with an ASBO!!!!! |

replied on: 7/7/2005 7:22:32 AM "Jack Jack shine your light"-played on dark winter evenings-the person who was fortunate enough to have a torch had to hide (usually on the rec )-the "finders" counted to 50 before shouting "Jack, Jack, shine your light" The hider would then flash the torch three times and the finders set off to catch him.The hider didn't have to stay in one place -so "Jack Jack" was shouted at intervals-this game would last all evening until the hider was caught , we had to go home to bed or we fell down scrambling around on the dark rec. During cold dark evenings we would also be out on the street with winter warmers-a tin can filled with glowing coals from the home fire, to which a long wire handle had been attached -we used to swing them around over our heads-it was quite an art to get the correct speed so the coals didn't fall out-quite dangerous, but I don't remember anyone getting burnt! |

replied on: 7/7/2005 2:00:59 PM And here was another game played on Ebenezer Street in Langley Mill, name forgoten. You needed a team of about 4 or more, and you started by forming a circle and and throwing a tennis ball randomly to somebody until a catcher dropped the ball. He was then "on" The limit of play was between two lamposts and the person "on" became the "hunter" who had to hit the others below the knee by throwing the ball. He could only move by bouncing the ball every few steps, so he would advance, driving the others down the street. Eventully when the others were approaching the lampost, they had to make a break, running past the thrower so he had a chance to hit their legs. When hit you joined the hunters. When there was more than the one hunter, they had to throw the ball between them. And so play continued until everybody had been hit. The hunted could protect their legs using their fists, and the hunted could also pick up the ball between clenched fists, however if they were touched by a hunter while holding the ball, they were "out" and joined the hunters. It was a great game, but became more complicated when the first car appeared between the lamposts. This gave the hunted an escape route to dodge behind from the hunters. Anybody know what this game was called. Was it played elsewhere. Wesley Lees |

replied on: 7/7/2005 2:21:31 PM Ah, Robert, but the difference between our then brand of 'Garden Jumping' and to days, is that if anyone had come out to complain, he wouldn't have been pronounced DOA at the nearest hospital later. It's all a matter of finesse. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 7/7/2005 3:31:10 PM Wesley Yes, I do remember playing that game - I think we even played a variant of it at school (Sedgwick Street). But I have no idea what (if anything) it was called. |

replied on: 7/11/2005 4:01:48 PM Azzabuv, Peter C, Suzard, Iceman, Marylyn, Wesley L, Philfred. I have prepared a draft article for our newsletter (it probably won't get printed for months, as we have a back log). There are comments from all of you in the article. If you would like to see a copy in advance, please send me an email (to Mail[@]HeanorHistory[.]org[.]uk - missing out the square barackets). In particular, if you would rather your comments be attributed to you in your real name rather than your pseudonym, or if you would prefer to remain anonymous, then definitely get in touch. Thanks Robert |

replied on: 7/11/2005 7:39:09 PM we used to do cart racing. get some wood and old pram wheels and make a cart or wagon, usually steered with your feet or string and a piece of wood that either dragged on your pram wheel or the ground, not actualy abs, but practical. then you'd pick what bits you had left and make your way home after coming a cropper when someone had pushed you too fast. ice |
