replied on: 5/21/2005 10:22:24 AM That's very interesting-great if you come up with a photo. The time of sale was very interesting to me-as Mr Brough was involved in a car accident in 1934, when he knocked my great uncle off his bicycle -my g uncle died-will have to dig out the newspaper report. |

replied on: 5/30/2005 8:58:46 PM Have found two photos (of the same vehicle I think) but the quality is a little poor. It is of a Dennis 20 seater circa 1928 taken when it was new. The livery apparently was green although that particular fact is hard to establish on a black and white photo! What happened to this vehicle after the take over by NDT is a mystery - at the moment in any case, I will keep digging. I do have a list of all the vehicles in the company at the time of takeover which amounted to nine made up of a mixed bag of Dennis, Reo, Durant, Chevrolet and a Morris Dictator (ex demonstrator for the Morris company). Hope this is of interest. |

replied on: 9/18/2005 9:45:41 AM Saxtons coaches were used for our away school hockey matches (Heanor Grammar - early 70's). We used to make bets as to whether or not the coach would break down! |

replied on: 9/18/2005 3:57:20 PM You're thinking of East View Terrace - I think there was a bus company there, but I think not until after the houses were demolished. In fact there might still be a coach yard there. I don't know where Saxtons were before then. |

I have a publication of a magazine from 1924 with an advert in it for A.Cope.Motor Engineer,of the same address. It reads TAXI'S and CHAR-A-BANCS of the best. All Cars on Super Cushion Tyres. Vulcanizing.Tyres and Motor Oils. Cars Overhauled. PaulR |

replied on: 3/26/2006 8:15:27 PM Copes were last situated on Watkinson Street in the early to mid 1980's by which time the business was starting to wind down having only one coach and a minibus. Also garged there were funeral/wedding cars and hearse used (in partnership?) with Gillots of Ray Street I believe. The cars being Austins dating from 1968 (E reg) with all the numbers following on - LVO ...E. I remember visting the garage on one occasion and being offered the business and four bedroomed house for £80,000 which unfortunatly I couldn't raise at that time - just think what the house alone is worth today! |
