Anti-German Hysteria - World War I
posted on: 5/27/2005 6:50:19 PM

This is something I have read about recently in the BBC History magazine.

In the 20 or 30 years leading up to World War I, the country had a huge influx of German immigrants. At the outbreak of the war, there was a mass media campaign against them, which whipped up quite a lot of hysteria, with huge amounts of damage being caused in the German communities - worst hit, apparently, was Sheffield, which had a large number of skilled German workers in the steel industry.

Anyway, I learned today that Heanor wasn't immune from this activity.

There was a German butcher who had a shop somewhere at Tag Hill, and, in the mass ill-feeling, someone put his window in. (And I always thought that Tag Hill folk were quiet and gentle people!)

It may only be a little thing, but its amazing how, over 90 years after the event, this has still lingered on in someone's memory (albeit at second or third hand).

I don't suppose there will be many readers of this site who can remember the First World War (!), but there may be others, like the family member who told me, who were told the same story by their parents or grandparents. It would be interesting if I can ever put a bit more meat onto the bones of this story.

Anti-German Hysteria - World War I

SOMEWHERE in my chaotic records system, there's a report of a German blimp which travelled along Ray Street and was last seen over the Red Lion Square area by a named PC.
I was looking for it the other day, but the search continues.

Guess who's to blame for all this chaos. I came in one day and the chaotic looking piles of papers, books and files were all squared up and even straightened away in a handy cupboard. Somewhere in that cupboard...........
