The PLEASURE of visiting a 1940s Dentist
posted on: 5/29/2005 4:55:11 PM

I can't recall exactly where this Dentist was situated, my mind being in a sudden, completely dazed blank as i was dragged towards it, at the age of 6 or 7. I think it was on the Market - somewhere.

At the Dentist's, i was forcibly HELD in the chair, facing an array of the latest torturing and pain-giving instrumentation known to man.... or child. I'd heared about this particular dentistry delight, from certain, swollen cheeked friends at school.
My tightly clamped jaws were strongly, painfully, prized apart and the dreaded long needle, with its attached cable, entered my open mouth... searching for those hundred painful teeth at the back, which needed filling AND capping. Having found them, she withdrew it briefly. The woman Dentist nodded to her companion behind her, who then began to swiftly? treadle away on the sewing machine's long, wide treadle, bringing the jabbing up and down needle alive in the air in front of my welcoming mouth - by and through its connected cable and the whole needle delight began. The jabbing, grinding needle felt as blunt and as thick as a modern biro. I bet cycling was the treadler's hobby.
After what seemed hours, it was finally over. But those fillings and cappings never moved for years. How many modern dentists can achieve that 100% success, even for a year?

Does anyone else have such delightful, dentistry memories?

Did he use the old dreaded treadmill operated needle too? I think the one which was at Heanor, is in a museum somewhere.

OUCH !!!!

You are bringing back some dreadful memories for me.

My dentist was Mr Ward whose surgery was on Market Street. He was well known in Heanor and his nickname was "the butcher" !!! He was quite a small man, very broad and bolding hairline. I remember sitting in the waiting room, hearing his surgery door open and hearing the thud of his feet coming down the stairs to collect you and sit you in the "chair". The smell of the surgery and the look of that awful drill made me shudder.

He wasn't very organised or have a receptionist and you would be made to sit for ages in the "chair" whilst he thumbed through piles and piles of bright yellow cards until he found the one with your name on.

He seemed to take ages examining your teeth, and if he found you needed a filling there was never an offer of some pain relief.

Clenched hands, the sounds of the drill, oh, Mr Ward I didn't like you.

Wasn't there a Government scheme, for a given time limit, around 1947, whereas anyone who wanted any tooth/teeth removing for free, could do so?
I know two people who said they took advantage of this brief scheme and had ALL of their healthy teeth removed (two sessions each) and then false teeth fitted. They were in their early 30s and always wore false teeth all the time i knew them. WHAT can you say??? As they lived in Heanor, it seems Mr. Ward's needle was kept quite busy for awhile. Good... good...

My God!! Mr Ward, - that man is resposible for my fear of dentists to this day! I remember as a kid of 4 or 5 being held down in the chair while he poked and prodded and drilled in my mouth for what seemed like hours. it's neerly 50 years on and I can still remember the smell, fear and pain
