The Shipley Dumbles was in fact, not an area, but a cottage. It was situated between Algrave Hall Farm and the Midland railway tracks a quarter of a mile or so above Shipley Gate Station, in the Marlpool direction. The cottage itself was almost across from Purdy House Farm, but slightly further to the East. On the 1896 map, the cottage is listed as 'The Dumbles Cottage'. On the 1891 Census, it's simply called 'The Dumbles'. The occupiers were - Jackson. Richard, Head, aged 57, cord wainer and coal miner. Bn. - Wirksworth, Derbys. Jackson. Emma, Wife, aged 60. Bn. - Camberwell, London. Jackson. Annie, Daughter, aged 31. Bn. - Wirksworth, Derbys. Jackson. Emily, Daughter, aged 25, general domestic servant. Bn. - Wirksworth, Derbys. Jackson. John L., Son, aged 20, coal miner. Bn. - Wirksworth, Derbys. Jackson. Linda, Daughter, aged 14, general domestic servant. Bn. - Wirksworth, Derbys. Jackson. George N/W? Son, scholar, aged 8. Bn. - Wirksworth, Derbys. Daykin. Leonard, Grandson, aged 11 months. Bn. - Ilkeston, Derbys. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 5/31/2005 1:15:29 PM I wonder whoever named the Dumbles cottage originally, infact came from the long ago demolished 'Dumble Houses', which were very near to 'Top Dumbles Wood', at the end of the Denby Dumbles lane. These houses were very isolated. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 12/4/2006 8:00:16 PM Paul Welcome to the site! The list of occupants is from the 1891 Census. You can see copies of the local censuses (from 1841 to 1901) at Heanor library. It's fascinating stuff once you get into it! You can also research censuses on the internet, but there is often a cost involved. Regards Robert |
