Lawrence posted on: 6/3/2005 6:27:18 PM Reading Bert's life history on a Lawrence Web page recently, with names/dates given of himself and Family plus a few friends, i decided to check the 1891 Census for his then address and household members in Eastwood. I searched his place of birth on Victoria St; when he would have been aged 5/6 in 1891, but no Lawrence Family. I then searched Walker St; where he moved to when he was 8 - no Lawrence. I then scrutinised every personal name and street in Eastwood for 1891. Still no Lawrence Family. In the 1901 Census, his address was given as being on Walker St; Eastwood. Perhaps they were away visiting someone, somewhere else on the 1891 Census night? Has anyone any further information or ideas on the Lawrence Family's apparent absence from their given home on that Census night? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 6/4/2005 12:44:43 PM Thanks, Bagpuss. That certainly clears that question up. I started to search Greasley, then gave it up after checking the Web Site again, seeing where they stated the Family "had moved around Eastwood quite a bit, for some years". Obviously they did, but not all directly in Eastwood. I like the Puddy in your picture - BUT.... watch-out for that beaked yellow peril. He's a meat-eater. For anyone interested in the story of Bert's life (and there are some surprising facts)- Google - 'D H Lawrence born', then click on the first heading at the top of the new page. The Site owner is Gavin Gillespie, of Eastwood. And where did the amourous adventures of 'Lady Chatterley' really take place? Was it around Hagg Farm/Coneygrey Farm, Underwood, or the grounds of Shipley Hall. Does anyone have any clues via Lawrence's writings? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 6/4/2005 1:58:35 PM The Breach, Greasley, in 1891, is now part of Eastwood, so its still true that the Lawrence family lived in Eastwood and moved about a lot. |

replied on: 9/3/2007 10:23:41 PM Does anyone know where the archives and papers relating to DHL are stored? Apparently somewhere there is a photo of him and my Gran when she was young. No-one in the family has it in fact we have no photos of her younger than about 60 so it would be nice to find it. He was about the same age as her and apparently lived on the same street. Must have been taken between 1901 and 1908 I should think around the Walker street area. |
