open day for past pupils of Mundy Junior School...
posted on: 6/10/2005 9:32:23 PM

ive heard that the school will be opening around the 16th of July for past pupils to take a look around the site, and buy some of the old furniture before the school is relocated. i thought it would be nice for as many people to know as possible as it gives you the chance to be 7 again

i know i'll definately be going!!! (even though im only 19 but thats not the point)

From what i've read concerning that school's past history, Amy, it's a good job you weren't a pupil there 40-50 years ago. If you had been, it wouldn't be a re-union/visit you wanted, it'd be an all-out bomb attack instead.

I was a pupil there during the time scale mentioned and don't have particularly bad memories. I supose our expectations were that much lower....or else I've blanked the really bad bits out

Hi, Marylyn. I took the memories of Mundy St; School, from the writings of a past local author, who described it, particularly concerning one teacher of that time, as a veritable 'hell on Earth'.
To be glum there, was apparently a high state of happiness.
Loscoe Road Boys school for me, thank goodness.

Amy

It's great to hear a perspective from a younger person, rather than us old codgers! (I must add that I didn't go to Mundy Street, and found my time at Langley Mill Juniors in the 1960's mostly enjoyable!)

If you can add anything about what school was like for you, what the teachers got up to, etc., it would be fantastic. Your history is just as important as the history of those who came before you.

the most memorable thing for me were the long hot summers, we would go across to the field opposite the school and play games (or just sit under the trees and mess about). i loved all that stuff.

another fond memory for me, was when we did the painting for the "quite area" (which is still there). i painted the elephant and part of the landscape. i think this stuck with me because it was probably my first experience of large scale art.i loved it. it was obviously beneficial as im now doing fine art at uni!!!

i was also the plant water-er for a while, this was a fun job because it made me feel all big and responsible

When I was there in the '50s we used to go on the Town ground for games. That was also where a great wagon would set up for polio jabs and to test us for T.B. when one of the teachers contracted the illness

That's one i missed, Marylyn. I was a member of the Town Ground's wrestling club though. I was known as 'Muscles'. I'll have to have a look one day soon..... see if i can still find one.

The local Author was at the closing ceremony and also mentioned it in the next edition of the 'Ripley and Heanor/Doom and Gloom', where he mentions the tyrannical rule of that certain teacher 50 years ago approximately, which i mentioned in an above Posting.
You were lucky time-wise, Marylyn, Amy.

It's still a nicely coloured Avatar though - whatever it is? Amy.

Yes, he' O.K., Amy. I did a bit of publishing outlet research for him some time ago. At the moment, he's (hopefully) finalising his latest book - 'Scruffy Chicken'. I've been asking him since last year when IS it coming out. Sloooooooowww.

I've got a signed copy of his last book - 'Lost Lad'. It's a very interesting read, but, as i told him, the mystery was a slight tad too easy to solve quite a while before the final chapter hove into view. But the/his Heanor and Peak District scenic descriptions made up for that.
