My Great Great Grandparents was Joseph and Mary Ellen Meakin. Joseph worked as a lace maker in the 1901 census. My family did eventually end up living in Brinsley, Notts (and still are). I was just wondering if anyone has any memories or info of the Meakin family, whether it be in Heanor or Brinsley? I am also researching my Grandma's side of the family, the Mee's. My grandmothers name was Violet Sadie Mee (born in 1936) before she married my grandfather, Vivian Meakin. She was born on Prospect Street in Marlpool. Sadly she passed away a few years ago so I don't have alot of information about the Mee's to go on, so any info would be greatly received. |

replied on: 6/24/2005 4:43:00 PM As Peter says, if you use the main web site (link above) you can send details of your email address to me via the Contact Page, and I will pass them on to Peter. I try to discourage people putting their email addresses on this website, as showing your email address is a certain way to increase spam! I too am a Mee, but I'm not aware of any direct link to Violet (though I have no doubt at all that there will be a link somewhere, as my family were Heanor/Marlpool/Smalley for several generations). I've never yet found a link between the Smalley Mee's and the Brinsley Mee's, but there will be one! Good hunting. Robert |

replied on: 6/25/2005 2:02:44 PM Hi, Allyhawk. I used to know Joe Meakin, of Heanor. This was in the early 1950s, at the 'Loscoe Road Boys School'. During 1953, his fists had an 'altercation' with one of the teachers faces. He was expelled and the last i heard of him, he and his parents had moved to Ilkeston. I also knew John Mee, of Peacock Town, Heanor, from the late 1940s, till the late 1950s. He was a miner, then a shop-keeper at Marlpool in the mid-1970s. He then left to re-enter the mines - destination unknown. There's also a John Mee, who is/was? Landlord of the 'Rays Arms' Public House situated on Ray St; Heanor. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 6/26/2005 4:53:16 PM I think my immediate family (the Meakin's) had moved to Brinsley by then but theres no doubt in my mind that the Joseph Meakin who you knew is one of my relatives. They all came from Heanor so I just need to find the link. As for the Mee family, I really don't have much of a clue yet, only just started to research them but thanks for the info Azzabuv, its bound to come in use sooner or later. Alice. |

replied on: 7/14/2005 1:33:42 PM I can vaguely remember a Meakin family at the bottom of Coppice Drive in the 50s/60s. A middle aged couple with no children living with them. Mr Meakin was a football referee at the time. regars Phil |

replied on: 2/20/2006 3:22:11 PM Hi, Just got a message that Elizabeth Meakin married George Brough in 1869 in Heanor. It seems that her father was William, a collier. This is all I have at the moment. Appreciate any leads to take it further. Thanks P |

replied on: 2/21/2006 3:05:07 PM My great great great grandfather was William Meakin b.1824c he married Martha Granger b.1828 both in Heanor. They did have a daughter called Elizabeth, she was baptised on 2nd Oct 1853 at Heanor St Lawrence, along with her brothers Thomas and Henry. BUT I cannot locate her in any census' so im not entirely sure when she was born. There is a Betsy/Betty though, also the daughter of William and Martha, born in 1849 in Heanor. I cannot locate a baptism date for her. Im wondering if maybe these two are one and the same, they just called her Betty for short. Regards, Ally. |
