Frontcentre, do you think your Elizabeth's father was JOSEPH when marriage details state he was WILLIAM?

a few doors away from THOMAS BROUGH in 1881 lived WILLIAM and MARTHA MEAKIN + 6 children and grandson-surely these were parents of ELIZABETH - ELIZABETH did have a brother called JOSEPH.

ELIZABETH's grandparents could be HENRY and FRANCES-
baptism at Heanor St Lawrence 24/5/1825-WILLIAM MEAKIN son of HENRY and FRANCES MEAKIN oof Langley Mill fathers Occ F.W.K.

I do have a Joseph Meakin who was the brother to William but he was born in 1843 so it couldn't of been him. I don't have an Elizabeth in my tree that was born in or before 1849. Except for one last is but I believe she died in 1849 aged 23.

There is another option... there is a completely different family of Meakin's born in Heanor that, so far, i am yet to link up with mine (but im sure they will sooner or later). Maybe it was the Joseph Meakin b.1813 that had Elizabeth, although I cannot find her with him in any census'.

I think you need to find their marriage certificate. That way it will give you her fathers name and her age at the time of marriage.

Where did you find her baptism date? Does it not give her parents names?

Regards,
Ally.

I believe that you are right - William and Martha were the parents which gives another generation Henry & Frances Meakin.

Again - many thanks

Allyhawk, I have your Meakins too. Betsy was the first daughter of William Meakin and Martha, but her name was spelt Grainger which is why you may be having problems. William and Martha had 9 children including Betsy. The reason you can't find them on the census records I think, is because the family lived with William's parents, Henry Meakin (1801) and Fanny West (1804). Betsy shows on the 1851 and 1861, but as I say, with her family and her grandparents. She disappears on the census recs after that, I assume she married - haven't researched that yet!! Martha Grainger was born in Dunstead, Derbyshire. My connection is, William had 7 siblings, one of his brothers, Edward Meakin(1837) was my great great grandad. I have lots more Meakins, but I hope this helps, if I can help further I will.

Hi Sue, so was Betsy's surname Granger then? And not Meakin? In the census she named Meakin. I have Elizabeth's baptism in 1853 and just assumed that this was 'Betsy'. William and Martha baptised 2 other children on the same day as Elizabeth. Do you have a baptism for Betsy at all? I also have so much info on the Meakin family, and it just keeps growing, I have a lot of Meakin children that died young, having spend hours looking through the cemetery records. I am happy to help you if you need to know anything.

Suzard.... After more research into my tree, i have found a connection with Timothy Meakin b.1817. Do you have any idea what he was in prison for? A contact of mine did a search but couldnt find anything on him.

Ally.

Sorry, don't know what Timothy was in prison for - only that he rejoined his wife and children and lived a long life. Don't have too much on the Meakins, as Timothy married into my family and is not a direct line.
Timothy married Phebe Hunt (b abt 1818 Langley mill) They lived at heanor, then Milford, then Derby -both were FWK's- Phebe had a grocers shop in Derby while Timothy was in prison (1881)
Their children were:
Ann, Catherine, Isaac, harriet, Jane, frederick and Louisa.
Timothy died 1902 age 84
Phebe died 1906 age 87

Timothy was son of Thomas/ Catherine Meakin and his known siblings were Hannah, Joseph, John., Jane , Sarah and Thomas.

Re Martha Grainger b. Dunstead- Dunstead is an area in Langley Mill/Aldercar- there is Upper and lower Dunstead Rd-if you go to Langley Mill/Aldercar Section there is a topic on Dunstead.

Hi Ally,
I didn't realise when I posted the message that we have already been in touch earlier this year on genesreunited. William Meakin on my tree married Martha Grainger (Granger) and their first daughter was Betsy Meakin. You have already have permission to view my tree, but if I can be of further help, please let me know
