Gillott Family - Heanor
posted on: 6/29/2005 10:00:49 AM

I'm trying to research my granma's family tree for her 90th Birthday next year, she's convinced she's a descendent of Samuel Watson but all I can find are Gillotts. Her father was Albert Gillott born Heanor 1882, son of Joseph Gillott Heanor c1845 & Eliza Gillott Heanor c1852. Her mother was Mary Ann Walker born 1883 Heanor? but no records found. Just wondering if anybody has researched Samuel Watson's tree & if my Granma's hunch is correct!? - Thank you for you help

1881 census shows
JOSEPH GILLOTT head 32 Coal Miner
ELIZA GILLOTT wife 26
WILLIAM GILLOTT son 11
MARY A GILLOTT daugh 7
CATHERINE GILLOTT daugh 4
BETSEY GILLOTT daugh 2
all born and living in Heanor
(there is also another JOSEPH GILLOTT 36, wife MARY A and their family living at Heanor.)

1901 census shows ELIZA GILLOTT age 49 born at and living at Heanor.
So maybe ELIZA's age was mistranscribed on 1881???

Marriage of JOSEPH GILLOTT registered Basford district (covers Heanor) June Qtr 1872 -dont know who he married
Also marriage of JOSEPH GILLOTT Basford dist 1879-but he married either Mary Blacket or Charlotte Saxton-possibly the latter.
How was Samuel Watson mentioned? Can you give any more info?

No relation to the infamous Ned - well not that I know of! May well be related to Mick Gillott, my granma's father/family were living at 32 Thorpes Rd in 1901 - though looks like there were 100's of Gillotts in Heanor.

Hi, Nkelly.
R.E. your G-Ma's assumption concerning herself being connected with the Watson side of the family. The Alfreton born Gillott visitor, 9 year old Elizabeth 'Watson' sounds intriguing in that respect. Did she settle fully at Heanor after the Census? Perhaps she was only decribed as a 'Visitor'? Was/is she the ambiguous connection?

R.E. Mick Gillott. Yes, it sounds like the correct address/house on the left-hand side (going down) of Lower Thorpes Rd;

Hi Nkelly,
No problem, Samuel & Fanny Stainsby were my GGG-Grandparents, the Gillott’s and Eley’s came over from Flanders with the Huguenots who were French Protestants.

That's very interesting information concerning the Ancestral Roots of the Gillotts and the Eleys, Jenny. I know people of both surnames. I've always thought that the Eleys had an Irish strain in them.

So Fanny was my GGG Grandfathers sister! Granma thought the Gillotts hailed from Switzerland & Germany & came over with the Norman's in 1066.

Yes if its the same Joseph?

From a book by Fred S. Thorpe
The Heritage of Codnor & Loscoe
“Loscoe Dam House was the Home of Mr Gillott and his daughter Miss Gillott She was a teacher at Loscoe Denby Lane School and had strong connections with Loscoe Church. Mr Gillott was agent to Vicas Hunter of Kilburn Hall, and the Dam House bears an inscription T.V.H. 1785 which are the initials of Thomas Vicas Hunter. The house contained a knitting frame, and the Gillott’s with the Eley’s came over from Flanders with the Huguenots who were French Protestants.

In the book it also says: Samuel Watson, the famous woodcarver, who did much of the carving at Chatsworth House. He was born at Loscoe in 1663, died 26th March 1715 and buried in Heanor Church.

Rec'd Joseph & Eliza's marriage certificate this morning. 29th June 1872, Independent Chapel, Basford Distrct marriage of Joseph Gillott (25yrs)to Eliza Brown(20yrs), both born Heanor. Joseph's father was William (deceased), framework knitter. So looks this ties in with your William & Joseph.
