replied on: 2/18/2006 11:32:00 AM I can't remember when it stopped either. However, it was in the 60's that I can recall having to recite the number to the grocer before he would take my mums grocery list from me. This was at Codnor Denby Lane when the co-op travelling shops came round. I was quite small and can remember that the counter was much bigger than me. Probably mid-60's that I am thinking about. It was a bit of a test rewarded with praise.’ suppose that’s why it is still printed in my memory. |

replied on: 2/18/2006 5:11:54 PM The small back street general store of the 1930s. A few small cakes in the window with attendant flies in full sun. Two or three more flies on their backs with legs in the air. Several loaves of bread with a cat fast asleep among them. Inside the shop unwrapped sweets in jars which required a hand to be inserted (often with black fingernails) in the jar to separate them. Yet there didn't seem to be as many ailments around then or the amount of packaging to be recycled. frano |
