replied on: 8/15/2005 11:51:43 AM Cigarette cases ! That reminded me of something for the ladies which you seldom see-the Ronson ladies cigarette lighter-tiny silver coloured lighter-a really elegant thing to possess! Also Stratton powder compacts-the only time you see them now is at collectable/antique fairs. Having a Stratton powder compact as a present heralded a young girl's womanhood. |

replied on: 8/16/2005 1:28:02 PM Gas light chain adjusters. They were approximately a foot in length, hanging from the gas mantle fixture in the room, one each side of the gas pipe input supply. Pull one chain and the light dimmed, pull the other chain to brighten again. Simple but effective. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 8/17/2005 10:25:13 AM Recall those when we lived in the Milnhay Council Houses built 1936/37 Mantles could be purchased from the good old Co-op and i recall Miss Parkers Shop top of Elnor Street still stocked them for people who had not converted to Electricity in 1960.They were very delicate and easily broken. The Street Lamps where also gas in the 40s not used during the blackout of course but dont remember anyone switching them on or turning them up after the War |

replied on: 8/17/2005 3:51:25 PM That's correct. When you went to purchase a gas mantle always buy it a companion or two. Otherwise, one careless nudge by a finger, especially when replacing a darkened hole in the bottom of it one - and there we go/went. Back to the shop again. Azzabuv. |
