replied on: 10/18/2006 10:07:52 AM There are two problems with the Woodlinkin family. First they have a father Samuel Booth, and secondly that William was born in 1837 which is way too early. The other family i.e., the Castledines, have a probably illegitimate William of about the right age, but birth place not Langley Mill. My nephew sent for the certificate of the Basford 1845 registered birth and it turned out to be a Nottinghamshire family and clearly not ours. So the only other Williams are Belper registered. |

I had forgotton I had this information on a very complicated family-apologies for not digging it out earlier!There is a very strong possibility that your William Booth is in fact the half brother and witness at the marriage of my Sarah Ann Booth who married George Thornhill-but I don't think you are a descendant of the man with 4 names-Henry John Hancock Brown. The William I have was 6 in 1851, 17 in 1861 -so the age of being 36 in 1881 tallies. 1851/61 Williams p.o.b. was given as heanor -but he was most probably born at langley lane (where mother lived at time of birth-hence giving langley Mill as p.o.b. in later years. The reason you can't find a satisfactory William in 51/61 is because his name wasn't given as Booth!!!! The William I have is the son of Esther/Hester Booth. Esther is the daughter of Samuel and Ann Booth -and had lots of siblings. 1841 Esther lived next door to parents and family working as a servant 1851 Esther age 27 was going by the name of Corkwell and living on Langley lane as the wife of Edward Corkwell age 50 b Nottingham.She had 4 children -all named Corkwell -all down as children of Edward and Esther Corkwell. Fanny 9 (birth reg Booth) WILLIAM 6 (no b. reg found, Reuben 3 (reg Corkwell) Walter 1 (reg Corkwell) 1861 Niger Row heanor Esther 37 still Corkwell and "wife" of Edward 65, children (all named on census as Corkwell) WILLIAM 17, Reuben 14, Walter 11, James 8, Sarah Ann (who was reg as Booth-named Corkwell on census) )4, and they had a lodger HENRY BROWN 28 b Brailsford Derby 1865 Esther Booth married Henry John Hancock Brown 1871 census shows Henry H Brown head 39 b Derby Hester Brown wife 48 Sarah Ann Brown daugh14 -this is Sarah Booth m George Thornhill John Brown son 9 (used name of Booth later-lived with married Sarah) Thomas Brown son 6 The children had a different name on each census!!! I don't think Esther ever married Edward Corkwell-no marriage has been found and she married Henry using the name Booth I know Sarah Ann gave John Henry Hancock Brown as her father when she married How many of the children were Browns or Corkwells I don't know -but I suspect Fanny was perhaps father unknown?? I must research these children further. If you would like to mail me -either P.M.me or ask Robert for my address-I can send you the census images! Fanny Corkwell age 9 in 1851 married Dec 1859 Basford district using the name Fanny Booth -to Horatio Nelson Barks 1891 shows Nelson St Heanor Henry Brown 58 Brailsford Esther Brown wife 69 Woodlikin Thomas H Booth Grandson 17 heanor Henry Barks Grandson Heanor!!! and who else was living on Nelson St at that time but William and Harriet Booth and family!! Also William and Harriet had a daughter named Esther Ann -after William's mother Esther and Grandmother Ann???? By the way there is a birth reg Dec qtr 1844 Basford dist William Corkwell 15 447 -which I have a strong suspicion is really William Booth! Have a lie down in a dark room for a while!!!! Suz |

replied on: 11/5/2007 6:36:05 AM Hi: The Sarah Ann Booth who married George Thornhill is my husband's great-grandmother. George is buried in Illinois in the Lutheran Cemetery, Peoria. I was looking at the 1901 Census of Hasland, Derbyshire and could not figure out how Henry Brown was George's father-in-law. I thought of several possibilities, but not the one you put forth. It seems to make a bit more sense than anything else. I appreciate the information on Sarah Ann's parents and siblings. The only one I knew about was her brother, John Booth. Sarah's death was registered in 1896, age 39, Chesterfield, volume 7b, page 392. It is my understanding Sarah was a midwife, but I have nothing to back this up. |

George packed up his sons, George (22) and Wilfred (19), and his daughter, Sarah (17)and left Grassmoor for Liverpool. The Thornhills departed Liverpool 27 July 1912 aboard the SS Lusitania and arrived at Ellis Island 03 August 1912. George listed his brother, Thomas, as a contact in England. Sarah did not emigrate with the family as she died giving birth to their daughter, Sarah, 17 years earlier. |

My research seems to start in 1901 and go backwards in time, therefore I may have to wait for more recent census data to make further progress. |
