Trying to remember all the coop shops in Langley mill in 1940-50's-omitting "other" shops
Starting at Aldercar, just before Sir Charles Napier was a grocery shop, furhter down Cromford Road on left was the Coal Wharf, then opposite Campbell St was the yard, housing Wedding/Funeral cars, Milk floats, Stables, Cobblers, on right hand side just after the railway crossing was the Greengrocers, the fishmongers, and on the corner of Dean St all in one shop was gents tailoring, shoes, school outfitters, next to that was the bank and offices, across the road on Dean St the hardware shop, then the side entrance to the Coop Hall, corner of Dean St/Cromford Rd was Butchers, grocery(which became self service in early 1950's,corner of Bridge St/Cromford Rd Gents Hairdressers, Chemists and across the road was the paint and wallpaper shop. Somewhere along that stretch was ladies hairdressers-which was upstairs. Can you remember anymore?Or who worked in the shops?

Sue
An Account of Co-op shops is given on the first page of "Shops in Langley Mill"
I worked at the grocery on a Saturday delivering Preordered goods to Stoneyford this was around 1950 they were taken by Van
and the People At Stoneyford could order from any of the Stores and have it delivered on a Saturday Morning.

Sorry-I'd forgotten I put some of the shops on another topic!!!! Another "Senior Moment".
The coop printed it's own calendar each year-each month had a black and white photograph of somewhere in the locality.
There was also the Coop "Mutuality Man" who collected house to house (on Fri evening)-I don't really know how that worked, I think it was some sort of saving? or credit? scheme, because every so often he gave out vouchers which you could spend at the Coop stores.

My mother was a Mutuality Collector in the 60's - her patch was Eastwood and Newthorpe, and parts of Langley Mill I think. It was a credit scheme - you received vouchers to spend at the Co-op, then paid back over a period - a form of HP, except that you could spend your vouchers on anything, whereas with HP the seller retained ownership of the bought item till you had paid a certain percentage back. And, of course, you still got your Divi!!!

I think that's how it worked anyway.

I've got none either. I used to live close to the yards (opposite the bottom of Gladstone Street), and visited them quite often (I helped on a milkround in the very early 1970's), but have nothing to show for it. The basic layout is still there today though (perhaps I ought to take some photos before it is all demolished).

Which ever the colour was, it was darkish and cheerless. Not very enthusing on a cold, wet Monday morning.

Ripley and heanor 15 April 1938
"For thehalf year ended March 7th sales amounted to £209240-6s-81/2d-a weekly average of £8046-6s-5d. The increase over the sales for a coressponding period amounts to over £13400 or 6.85%.and represents the greatest increase recorded for many years. Members confidence in the stability of the Society is shown by the increase in share and Penny Bank capital. The former now stands at £271697-4s-51/2d.Dividendon members purchases-£107000 at 1/11 in the £ = £10254-3d.
Severe congestion has been apparent at marlpool grocery department for some time and it has now been decided to modernise and enlarge the shop. To do this it has been necessaryto close the Drapery dept, but it is felt our members in that area will receive good service from the Heanor shop"
