We used to go there religiously every year - although the C9 would take us from Aldercar to Moorgreen/Watnall, I think there was a special bus just for the show. Never did quite understand why we went, but I suppose it was fun at the time. I take it that it is still going? |

replied on: 8/29/2005 9:33:22 PM It's a country/horticultural show. Cattle and small animal show. Sheep dog demonstrations. Show jumping. Show ring for demonstrations ie Birds of Prey, The Hunt, Dog Show etc. Flower and vegetables, baking and craft competitions. Exhibitions and demonstrations of crafts. Music and dancing. Stalls and funfair. Beer tent. You can easily spend a whole day there if you enjoy that kind of thing |

replied on: 8/30/2005 1:17:58 AM It has been good weather this year for Moorgreen show-as a child I remember it always used to rain.Woodwards at Headhouse Farm Mapperley won awards for their prize goats for many years-and my dog walker won a rosette in the show jumping today! Many years ago-well before my time , I believe it was held on Hall Park-Mansfield Road-the site of the (now) school and sports centre. |

Moorgreen Show
replied on: 8/30/2005 3:06:06 PM quote: If it was held in Eastwood, why was it called the Moorgreen Show? Or did it start in Moorgreen, then move to Eastwood, then to its current site (which I suppose is Watnall rather than Moorgreen anyway). |

replied on: 9/7/2005 9:25:53 PM "The Moorgreen Floral and Horticultural Society held their first Annual show at "Mrs Smedleys, the Horse and Groom Moor green" in September 1849 and prizes were awarded for Dahlias, Vegetables, Fruit and Flowers. It was reported in the Nottingham Journal that the exhibits were "most splendid" with the exception of the Dahlias which had been affected by early frosts. In 1853 the Greasley and Selston Agricultural Association opened with a ploughing match followed by a "show of stock and roots". Later in the same day Mrs Smedley of the Horse and Groom provided dinner for sixty members and friends. At the same show awards were also presented as follows: "10 shillings to Frank Mellors for being the labourer who had brought up the largest family without parochial relief"-he had 12 children. £1 was also awarded to Charles Severn who had worked for Mr J. Godber for upwards of 30 years and was the labourer who had lived longest on the same farm. So possibly the name "Moorgreen Show" comes not only from the place it was first held, but from The Moorgreen Floral and Horticultural Society who were the founders of it. |
