| suzard Researcher Quote | Reply | | Tram and Trolley bus posted on: 9/7/2005 10:13:39 PM A Tram belonging to the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Tramways Company (1913-1932)made its first trip between Loscoe and Kimberley on 4th July 1913. The line from Ripley to Nottingham was completed and opened on 1st Jan 1914, a distance of 15 miles, which it covered in 1 hour 40 minutes. The tram had green and cream livery, capable of a speed of 30mph and weighing unladen 13 and a half tons was a real force to be reckoned with! It was on 5th October 1932 that the last tram rattled its way into the depot at Langley Mill. In 1928 the company was granted permission to operate a Trolleybus system and on Thursday 5th October 1932 the first vehicles began their service between Ripley and Nottingham, the city terminus being in King Street.The trolley bus made its final journey in 1953 |

replied on: 9/8/2005 12:28:08 AM Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Traction Company IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PASSENGERS Ripley-Nottingham Trolley Vehicle Service On and after Thursday October 5th 1932 a service of Trolley Vehicles will be operated between Ripley and Nottingham on the present Petrol Bus route to Cinderhill then via Stockhill Lane,Percy Street,Alpine Street, Church Street, Valley Road, Nottingham Road, Sherwood Rise, Mansfield Road, Milton Street,Parliament Street, King Street and Queen Street, the City Terminus being in King St. Trolley Vehicles will run between Ripley and the city terminus as under: Monday to Friday Every 15 mins from 5am to 6-30am Every 10 mins from 6-30am to 9am Every 15 mins from 9am to 4pm Every 10 mins from 4pm to 7pm Every 15 mins from 7pm to 11pm Saturday: as above until noon, then every 10 mins until 11pm Sunday:Every 15 mins from 9am to 11pm Printed time tables may be obtained from the Petrol Bus Conductors. In addition to the above service of Trolley Vehicles, Petrol Buses will run at workers times to serve those factories on Nuthall Road and Alfreton Road between Stockhill Lane and Canning Circus only. Special note- The Petrol Bus facilities will be extremely limited, and passengers are strongly recommended to make use of the Trolley Vehicles. replied on: 9/8/2005 1:52:43 PM i wish they run the trams all the way to heanor,the lines are still there from the last one.i can remember the electric trolly buses in derby and nottingham in the 60s.often than not the connectors would come off the overhead lines and the conductor would have to reach up with huge pole to put them back on..not reliable, but very quiet. |

replied on: 9/10/2005 4:40:33 PM Last tram 3 Oct 1932 Last trolley bus 1953-although I think they continued in Nottingham after that date! Of course the new tram system started in Nottingham a couple of years ago-I know that service began on 9 Mar but not sure of the year -2002??? |

replied on: 5/17/2007 2:06:07 PM My dad used to be a bus conductor with Midland General,for a few years in the late 1950's. I presume the term must have come form something like "conductor man" as one of the conductor's jobs during the trolley-bus era would be to re-attach the pole to the overhead cable if it ever got dislodged. In my youth visiting Derby I can still remember the trolley busses. The pole to attach the cable rider was a long bamboo that fitted into a tube that ran the length of the bus on the pavement side, with access to it from the platform. |
