Does anyone know if there was ever a place in or around Heanor called Dunstead? I know theres a Dunstead Road in Langley Mill but I can't find anything about a place called Dunstead. Any info would be great. Regards, Ally. |

replied on: 9/13/2005 4:48:11 PM not sure about this, but at Aldercar there was Dunstead House and possibly the area which is now called Dunstead Road was originally Dunstead. It could possibly be similar to what is now called Milnhay Road Langley Mill-originally that area was just called Mill Hay and described as being part of Heanor |

replied on: 9/14/2005 1:18:53 AM Ally I don't think you'll find another Dunstead besides the one in Langley Mill/Aldercar, which is why I've moved the post to that Forum. What specifically are you looking for? Dunstead is one of the oldest parts of Aldercar, but comprised nothing more than a few habitations, an early coal pit or two, a brick works, and, in Victorian times, a couple of very posh houses. Azzabuv Dunstead Lane was what later becane Dunstead Road/Upper-Lower Dunstead Road. The Dunstead pits were off the maain drag. Regards Robert Mee |

replied on: 9/15/2005 1:13:02 PM As a child if we went to that area, from Station Road walking up Lower and Upper Dunstead Road was referred to as "going up Dunstead" we knew it was in Aldercar, but if we went "the other way round"-i.e. up Cromford Road to Aldercar St Johns(on the corner of Upper Dunstead Rd) we referred to "going up Aldercar"-those phrases were all that was needed for mother to know where you were. |

replied on: 9/16/2005 9:36:17 PM In the index, Robert, it mentions Dunstead Lane as well as Dunstead Rd; That's why i thought they were seperate subjects. Unfortunately, i don't have the Society's letter for that particular index and yes, the index could be refined. That's the trouble, there's always room for improvement, all the time. I should think it could be like painting the 'Firth of Fourth' bridge - never ending. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 3/13/2006 9:52:00 PM Robert. Dunstead had got two posh houses both on the left hand side and at the top of Lower Dunstead Road,Dunstead Lodge which was the home of Doctor (Jack)Holmes and the main drive was opposite Thompson street with the tradesmens entrance where St.Andrews drive is. The other house was Dunstead House between Ebenezer Street and Thompson Street I never knew who lived there but in the mid 1950's there were 1 or 2 Foreign Frame Mechanics from Aristoc Living there,us kid's thought they were spy's.In the fields at the back of Dr.Holmes was Godkin House farm and according to the 1900 O.S.Map there was an old coal shaft, disused. Could this have been Dunstead colliery? There was a brickyard at the bottom of Ormonde Street at the side of the railway and stretching back to the Star foundry. PaulR Has anyone any idea which area West hill covered? Please. |
