Hull, in the Society's Newsletter, number 192, of April, 1994. (*** But first, in 1910, pupils of 'The Heanor Secondary School' raised the sum of three guineas, which was forwarded to Captain Scott, at his London address, in preparation for his coming epic journey to the South Pole. The Headmaster of the school at the time, was Mr. R. Stoddard, Esq. Captain Scott's reply was as follows - Azzabuv ***). "My Dear Sir, I should be glad if you would convey to the boys and girls of your school an expression of my keen appreciation of their generosity, in subscribing towards the expenses of my Antartic Expedition. I have registered 'Heanor' as a name to be given to one of our dogs. I think it is a hopeful sign for the future of our Country, that the younger people should so readily support an undertaking which is designed to maintain the exploring traditions of our Race. I trust that this spirit, which has done so much to build up our Empire, will always remain the birthright of our Countrymen and can testify to the encouragement it gives to those, who like myself, are anxious that the British Flag should fly in the uttermost parts of the Earth. Yours very truely, R. Scott". Unfortunately, as we know, Captain Scott and his brave party were beaten to the South Pole by the Norwegian explorer, Amundsen, after which, Captain Scott and the other members of his party perished in the snowy wastes. Poor old ''Heanor'. Azzabuv. |
