Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Mitton were welcomed by Mr. J. Malpass of Borrowash, brother of Mrs Slack, who presented Mr. Mitton with a key to formally open the building. Little Sylvia King presented Mrs Mitton with a beautiful bouquet of white carnations and cream roses, Mr Malpass presided at the meeting held inside, at which Mr. Mitton spoke of the good work being done in Denby Lane district by Mrs Slack and family, and how delighted he and Mrs Mitton were to be present at the opening of the room. They would watch the progress of the Mission and wished it every success. Speeches were also made by Mr. C. Mettam (chairman, Heanor Council), Councillor B. D. Elliott, and Mr. J. Wright. A solo was rendered by Miss Nancy Slack, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. E. Slack. The place was packed. Votes of thanks were voiced to all by Mrs Slack and Mr. W. Slack. Afterwards a tea was held in Loscoe Baptist Schoolroom (kindly lent). When upward of 160 persons was catered for, and enjoyed a good repast. In the evening a concert was given in the schoolroom to a large audience. Songs were sung by Mrs. S. Hogg and Mrs Elliott, Langley Mill; duets by Messrs. Wilson and Thorpe; violin solos, Miss K. Belfield; piccolo solo, Mr. C. Moore; recitation, Mrs Belfield; monologue, Mrs E. Slack; reading, Miss N. Slack; pianoforte solo, Master R. Styles; accompanists were Mrs Heath, Mr. C. Weston, and Master R. Styles, Mr D. Tarlton presided. Thanks to artistes and all who had helped at tea were voiced by Mrs T. Mellor and Mrs Slack, and heartily accorded. Proceeds were for the Mission Funds. But could any one tell me when it closed? (I think it was in the 80’s) the Mission had two fires in the same year but so far I’ve not found it. Jenny |
