replied on: 5/17/2006 7:54:05 PM Those shops always seemed to be changing. If I remember right the milkbar didn't appear untill the mid 40s. There was a wallpaper shop, a shoe shop, Mr Hollingworths sweet shop and a jewellers who didn't stay very long. Just below there was a house which stood back a bit with a small showroom in front of it displaying bathroom ware etc. I think it was Mr Daniels a plumber. Below again was Hubbards chipshop and next door was a newsagent. There was a mens hairdresser somewhere there then a school and the Labour Exchange. So long ago Ice. |

replied on: 5/18/2006 8:03:28 PM Ice. It was just above where Morleys dye house used to be. I think it was part of the same building as the Labour Exchange. |

replied on: 5/18/2006 8:10:43 PM That would be the National School. My mother was educated there in the 1920's. The gents hairdressers shop was run by Geoff Saxton in the 1960's until its closure, and the newsagent's shop nearby was Whittons. |
