replied on: 10/22/2006 9:22:05 PM Having worked in Poynters butchers for about 6 years when I was younger and learnt a lot of my trade there no one was as sad as I to hear of its closure. Sad loss , so many butchers dissapeared. When I was there there were many butchers in the town. Woods on the market place, CO OP on the corner had a butcher,Horsleys on the corner of Munday St and Ray St.Dewhust on the corner of market St. Poynters of course, down the road there was another opposite derby arms Worleys I think, and Larry Raisin down the bottom. Also cresswells had a butcher in for a while who opened his own shop Tovells which also dissapeared. I know its not Heanor but just have to mention the old guy in Loscoe just opposite Denby lane cant remember his name but he had the biggest queues. Always remember going there with my father for our weekly meat when I was about 10 (1970) |

replied on: 9/6/2007 3:07:12 PM I lived in what is now the tattoo shop,we moved from Ray Street on the back of my dads coal lorry in 1955. My parents Jean & Albert Jenkins ran it as a fish chip shop for about 3 years. A bag of chips then was 3d, for 4d you could have mushy peas and fish bits. There was a strange by-law at the time not allowing fish & chips to be sold on 6 days a week, so Tuesday was pie & mash day. Two guys from Kimberley then opened the Heanor Sales & Exchange shop there, a little bit up market to Freddy Crook's. |

replied on: 10/8/2007 2:59:55 AM So now Rowells is to close Sat, Oct 13th. Another blow to the town centre! They havent appeared to keep up with the times over the last years but it is sad to see such another institution bite the dust. Had a few things from there as a kid. Anybody got the posterity pics underway? |

replied on: 11/2/2007 11:17:12 AM G'DAY ICE Hancocks hardware was there for many years it was next door to Curry's, I am pretty certain it was still open into the 60's. When I started work at Humphreys motor cycle shop in the early 50's we used to get files and things from there, they sent me over for a 12inch bastard file, I was scared to ask him. BILLH |
