Winter of 1963

does anyone have any memories of the winter of 1963 or stories for that matter.it was the coldest and the best white christmas i ever saw.and the endless fun we had playing in it,didn't care about the chaos in those days, well not when you we're young.
here are some facts:
The big freeze started just before Christmas '62. The weather in the first three weeks of December was changeable and sometimes stormy.
The winter of '62-'63 was the coldest winter on record with an average temperatures throughout the winter of -0.3C.

My husband remembers having a 1959 Austin in 1962 and that winter it froze solid -I don't remember it at all-remember the thick fog we used to have, but not the snow.

i remember real pea soupers as they used to call em,it was always foggy in winter when i was a kid...now you hardly see them.we used to watch the coal lorries and buses struggle through marlpool in the snow and ice in 62/63.
mind there wasn't many cars about then on our street, except for the pub and bookies who had some of the best cars.

And the acrid, choking stench of sulphur, in many spots, as the fumes from the burning coal fires were forced almost down to pavement level at times.

just watching the old dust carts struggle with the hills in them days was a sight, that's when they had to push the side panels up and empty the bins in about three or four foot of snow.but they still got round,i can't remember them missing a week.that was when they fetched from off your back yard and you put ashes down on the paths to help get around. but i just thought it made a mess of the snow, why ashes?.
