The opening up of a new branch business of this kind will be of great benefit to the district, as upwards of 130 hands are employed. Where would this be? Pickersgill and Frosts spring to mind-any idea? |

replied on: 11/17/2005 5:26:29 AM I thought it may have been Pickersgill and Frosts, but didn't think Pickersgill was large enough to employ 130 people -I used to pass the firm every day on my walk to school-Turners one end of the bridge, Pickersgill the other, but I probably thought the building smaller than it really was, as it was overshadowed by Aristoc, which took up most of the street! I wonder if Pickersgill and Frosts were the Derby firm referred to? Or did they take over at a later date? |

replied on: 11/17/2005 7:56:02 AM Some time ago i did some Family History Reseach For a descendant of the Pender family. Robert Pender born Scotland 1861c living at Derby Child 1862 Derby Robert Pender 1871c living Heanor Son born 1871 Heanor. Robert Pender 1881/91c Living Langley Mill. As we know Robert was an Engineer and ran the the Factory which later became Pickersgill and Frost 1901 census still living Langley Mill But now a District Rate Collector aged 71. It is my belief they closed the factory and it was then reopened as per the article that Sue has posted |

replied on: 4/10/2006 8:24:36 PM I've been doing some family history research as I'm related to the Frosts of Pickersgill & Frost. The following directory entries appear for P&F: White’s 1874 directory - Devonshire Street & Siddalls Road, Derby. Kelly’s 1891 directory - 1-7 Siddals Road, Devonshire Street & 25 Cockpit Hill, Derby. Kelly’s 1895 directory - same 3 Derby addresses and also Star Foundry, Langley Mill. Kelly’s 1899 directory - only Star Foundry, Langley Mill. This fits in with the 1895 date in suzard's original post. As for the size of the company, the 1881 census has Samuel Pickersgill's occupation as "Iron Founder employing 90 men [&/8] boys", so 130 in 1895 is quite plausible, although I think suzard's point was about the size of the site itself rather than the company :-) I think Samuel Pickersgill died in 1890, although I'm not sure about this, so he's not on the 1891 census for us to see the size of the company then. John Wiliiam Frost didn't die until 19 May 1893, so he does show on the 1891 census, but unfortunately his occupation is just down as "Iron Founder". Maybe their deaths was part of the reason for the move to Langley Mill?? As far as I know, John Arthur Frost & Albert Booker Frost (John William Frost's sons) took over management of the company, I'm not sure about the Pickersgill involvement though. Hope this is of some help. If anyone has any other information about P&F or the Frost family I'd love to here about it. |
