My elder brother, however, had a long association with the scouts. I remember a fairly stuffy wooden hut on Milnhay road - near the entrance to Vic Hallams. There were very many of us at that time, in the late 60's |

replied on: 11/27/2005 7:43:49 PM I remember the Scout Hut, my brother was a cub. Was the one of the scout leaders Ken Frogson sometime in the 60's? I was a Brownie at the hut opposite where the leisure centre is on Hands Rd. |

Langley Mill Boy Scouts
replied on: 11/28/2005 10:16:28 AM A cub pack (and possibly Scouts) used to meet (50's) in an upstairs room at the Central Methodist Chapel (now a light fitting warehouse) on Cromford Road. When we were "being daring" we would sneak upstairs to have a look into the room -banners, etc were kept there. Wonder if they moved from there when the scout hut was built?? A Brownie pack used to meet in the Church Hall next to Aldercar Infants School Cromford Road (now demolished)Brown Owl was Jessie Todd-the milkwoman from Campbell Street (there is a pic of Jessie on her horse drawn milk cart in the society's Langley Mill publication.) We used to dance around a large toadstool, then each platoon would sing their song -I was in the elves *Here we are the little elves, helping others not ourselves", then our penny subs were thrown at the toadstool.!!! |

Langley Mill Boy Scouts
replied on: 11/30/2005 11:31:52 AM The 1st Aldercar boy scouts were formed at The Parish Rooms on Elnor Street in CIRCA 1948 by the new Scout master Stuart Willett. The reason it was called the 1st Aldercar was because there had been previously a 1st Langley Mill Troop which was Disbanded. Meeting were held at a smaller hut behind the Parish Hall until they moved to the Chaple at the bottom of Gladstone Street until its closure. The group then purchased a large Shed From The Smith family of Edstone House and it was placed on the site of the now Telephone exchange on Milnhay Road for a number of Years. The land was required for the Telephone exchange so the Scout Hut was moved to the end of Milnhay between the last Council House and the Bailey Brook. Some Time during this period the troop name was changed to 1st Aldercar and Langley Mill. |
