| RMMee Moderator Quote | Reply | | Heanor Grammar School posted on: 12/4/2005 12:16:03 AM I've been asked to write a history of the Heanor Grammar School. Fortunately, I have a lot of help to start off with, not least the reminiscences of Ralph Stoddard, the first headmaster, and Geoff Stone, the last headmaster. But, if anyone out there would like to assist, just let me know, or just add anything you can remember to this site - we already have a topic to cover the school teachers, but what about the building, the educational system, the non-teaching staff, the wartime changes. Any and every thing may be of help, so please add items, whether you think them useful or not. What was the school hymn, and the school motto? (I know I have access to both those answers, but it might get the topic going!) |

replied on: 12/4/2005 1:37:18 PM Well, as far as I know it was He Who Would Valiant Be - I'll have to check the Jerusalem theory though. Perhaps the school hymn changed at some stage? Certainly Valiant was the hymn sung at the unveiling of the War Memorial in 1923. I was thinking of that as the title for the book. |

replied on: 12/4/2005 2:14:13 PM School motto-"ANIMO ET FIDE"-meaning "by courage and by faith" School hymn (as sung at every Old Students' Reunion)-TO BE A PILGRIM (First line is "HE WHO WOULD VALIENT BE"). In assemblies, Speech Days, etc, the announcement was always "We will now sing the School Hymn, To Be A Pilgrim" So a more apt title for the book would be "TO BE A PILGRIM". replied on: 12/4/2005 4:24:44 PM "Animo et fide" would also make a resonable title. But then so would "To be a pilgrim" and "He who would valiant be". The only problem I've got with the pilgrim one, is that people might think it a religious book. Of course, I could stick with the tried and trusted "History of Heanor Grammar School"!!!!!!! I've emailed your PC-less friend, so will hopefully hear from them soon. |

replied on: 2/11/2006 6:09:42 AM I have been reading with great interest all of your posts. I was at Heanor Grammar 67 - 70 after which we emigrated. I remember many things about the school but maybe they are to modern for this forum? Mr Stone was Headmaster lol here I am about to celebrate my 50th Birthday (March 9th 2006) and I still call him Mr Stone. Is Mr Stone still with us? |

replied on: 2/11/2006 7:34:37 AM Yes, I had a meeting with him in December, and email him regularly. Yes, I still think of him as "Mr Stone" and find it quite difficult to call him Geoff! My arrival at Heanor Grammar was until after you'd left. My view on history, is that if it was in the past, then it is history, and if it is happening today, then it will be history soon!!!! So yes, please, anything at all about the school or the area in general would be appreciated. Bearing in mind my task in relation to the history of the school, if you want to send anything direct to me in the terms of reminiscences, please feel free to do so - in some ways, it is proving easier to get "old" information rather than the more recent (though I have got loads on the reorganisation of the school, which you just missed). Welcome to the site! |
