Suzard - what you say is not entirely correct, as I was in form 3A in 1958. This was the "second division" as I was relegated from the top flight after the second year. Sid Bailey wrote on my report "He finds the work easier in his new form and has done well. I hope he continues his efforts."

Spent all the last week working on the book...

The earliest reference to "To Be a Pilgrim" that I can find is in 1941.....

Can anyone give a definite earlier use of this hymn at the school?

(PS - I won't take answers from anyone under 75 years of age unless its documented!!)

I stand corrected -it was 4th 5th forms which were R/H/F

I suppose it was after you had "chosen" your subjects for "O" level

Ooh a discussion has broken out now about how forms were streamed -but before my time -so I'll have to wait for proof before I post!!!

I think the A/B/C streaming was by academic ability???It was A/B/C in 1959 what was the streaming before then?

I seem to recall the schoolmasters/mistresses belonging to certain houses too.

Robert, earlier use of school hymn -documented as I am under 75!!!!
The Gazette
Nov 11th 1938
Heanor Secondary School Speech Day

......... proceedings opened with the singing of the school Hymn, "he who would Valiant be".....

...also
School magazine March 1929 Volume 8 No22
there is a refence to Speech Day Dec 12th 1928 "proceedings closed with the singing of 40 years On"
and on the next page there is a topic
"Suggested School Song"
followed by the words to a little "ditty"

Maybe this means they were looking for a school song/hymn????

Years up to mid 1930's yet to be searched

I'd missed the Gazette's reference, but had seen the 40 Years On reference. So, 1938 currently has it........

..... unless someone knows otherwise!

I went to Heanor Grammar School from 1955 - in 1A for astart (top stream!), then 2L (not sure what the "L" stood for - ? Languages), then 3A (which was a demotion because I had done badly), then 4H, then 5H. My First Form reports are signed by the redoubtable E Clucas Sykes!

From 1951 to at least 1955, the 4th and 5th Forms had a letter to signify the type of course you were doing:
L = Arts and Languages
S = Maths and Science
G = General Course.
Don't know when this ended.

PS - I still don't think we have resolved which colour Mundy House was.

School magazines
4/5 L S G are mentioned until 1960 edition -so that would be for school year 58-59
1960 Form 4/5 -no mention of letters
1961 Form 4/5 F R H

1959 mentions Forms 2/3 L a and alpha

1960 mentions Forms 1 a b and c

Can anyone who was at the school post-1960 tell me what the position was with caps?

I have found a reference to caps (and girls' berets) being scrapped in 1957/8, but this seems a bit early to me.

From an old trophy I have seen, I can confirm these colours - but still don't know about Mundy (not introduced until the 1968/9). Yellow rings a bell with me, but it may not have been.

Caps and berets (although a few wore them) were not part of the uniform by Sept 1959.

Absolutely certain on that!

Robert, Just spoken to 2 people who left school in July 1859 and one is certain she wore a beret all the way through school, the other is 95% sure. So it seems the last school year they were compulsory was Sept1958/July 1959. Which confirms they were phased out by school year Sept 1959/July 1960.
I am 100% certain they were not worn by Sept 1959, but was not too sure about the previous year.

Has anyone got anything (newspaper cutting or similar) on the opening of the Music Centre in the old Fire Station, circa 1971 - 1972?
