replied on: 1/21/2008 2:04:28 PM In 1964, the two GCE classes were transferred from Aldercar "en bloc", one into the fifth year(including me) and one into the fourth year. I wrote a short article about this in The Henorian last year called "An accidental Pupil" The two classes were kept seperate as Aldercar had done different GCE sylabusses, but some pupils, stayed on into the 6th form. |

replied on: 1/21/2008 6:26:25 PM Round about 1966-7, the sixth formers did not have to wear the school uniform. I believe this was a decision made by the school council which was formed to let the pupils have more say in the running of the school. As I recall, each form elected a pupil to represent them on the council. About that time, the council also passed a motion to scrap school prefects. It was felt that the system was outmoded and did not fit into 1960's society. |

replied on: 1/22/2008 7:08:38 PM I too am sure Howitt was yellow ( as per my original post dated 11/08/07). I remember the coloured braids the girls wore for games being red, blue, and yellow to distinguish House teams. There again, I was probably taking more notice of the girls than the colours. |

replied on: 1/22/2008 10:31:10 PM What year did you leave the Grammar Loomis? And which House were you in? (And I don't blame you for paying attention to the girls - especially if they had yellow braids!) Likewise Suzard, what year did you leave, and which House? (But please don't ask me which House I was in - I haven't a clue! Houses were really not that important come the 70's) |

replied on: 1/22/2008 10:57:08 PM I started at H.G.S. in 1956, left in 1961, and was in Flamstead House. I achieved absolutely nothing during my time there, and must admit I hated every minute of my five-year stay. I was the second oldest of four brothers to attend the school, although my elder brother and I started together in 1956, and for two years (1959 and 1960) we were all four there at the same time. I think this must constitute some sort of record for the school. The interesting part is that I was the only brother to complete the full five years, despite none of us moving schools. That is a story in itself !!. |

replied on: 1/24/2008 10:01:59 AM Re house colours - a friend who started HGS in 1961 states that Ray was red, Flamstead was blue and Howitt was white at that time. She says that berets must have been phased out in the early 60's as she had one and wore it on the first day only. They were supposed to be worn and most of the new pupils wore one on the first day at school, got laughed at, and never wore one again. |

replied on: 1/24/2008 1:27:05 PM They were definately not compulsory wear by 1959/60 school year and that year the majority of pupils did not have one -or wear one on the first day -they didn't even appear on the uniform list for new starters -which was very detailed -it even listed the type of pencils needed - Hb, 2H etc |
