I managed a full two weeks at cubs, in the 1960's, at the scout hut on Milnhay Road, at Langley Mill, but I have no doubt that some of you had a more illustrious record than me. I ask because 2007 will be the centenary of the scouting movement, and the Society has been approached for help on any help we can give on the local angle. |

replied on: 11/19/2007 2:08:48 AM I remember going to the Brownies and girl guides. The Brownies was at Aldercar Church hall (next to where Aldercar Infants school was) Jessie Todd, the milkwoman , was our Brown Owl. There was a large wooden "mushroom" which we used to dance around at the beginning of the session, then each platoon group danced around in their groups and sang "their" song -I was in the "Elves" -"here we are the little elves, helping others not ourselves". Then the brownie promise and salute was given "I promise to do my duty to God and the King" Then it was on to the enjoyable part of the evening -playing games. Then into various groups to "do our badges" -for things like cooking, sewing firemaking, etc. The uniform was a tan/brown dress which seemed to have a hundred button down pockets (in reality probably 4!) your platoon badge was sewn to this, a dark brown beret, a "special" brown leather belt and a yellow tie -which was a very complicated affair -it was a square of yellow material which was folded in a certain way so that you were able to thread your belt through the "tie" part of it and somehow 2 parts were pulled out of the corners which were tied at the back of the neck-all of this was pinned together with the Brownie (metal) badge. You weren't a fully enrolled Brownie until you could do the tie correctly!!! It was like doing origami with material. The Guides I went to was the HGS group -much more sophisticated - navy skirt, blue blouse, navy leather belt -and of course the girl guide badge -the platoons were named after flowers. The best part of it was on "Guide" day you were allowed to wear your guide uniform to school instead of the regulation school uniform. |

replied on: 11/19/2007 12:53:03 PM yes, I think it was 3rd Heanor guides, Robert. I have no photo of Aldercar Church hall - I remember it as a wooden building -tucked away from the road - and the surrounding area always seemed to be waist deep in grass/weeds. I know you went up a few steps to the entrance. |

replied on: 11/21/2007 10:09:25 AM Suz, It was a brown dress with leather belt, two pockets under that. Yellow criss-cross tie with badge in the middle, bobble hat! If I get round to it I'll take a picture for you! |

replied on: 1/14/2008 10:12:37 PM Robert, 3 people I have spoken to remember Mary Payne (one of them my hubby! one of them was a friend of hers) Her full name was Ruth Mary Payne but she went by the name of Mary. Her brother Max was a pupil at the school and he occassionally attends the Old Student Reunions. Mary Payne lived at Penybryn Heanor Rd Smalley and had come home from school for lunch -ran across the road to catch the bus back to school and was fatally injured in a collision with a coal lorry. She had been a pupil at HGS for just over a year and was a member of the HGS Girl Guides. She was to have sung carols with the Guides around the Christmas tree in Heanor market place -which of course never came to fruition. She was age 12 when she died and her funeral report was in the Ripley and heanor 30th Dec 1955 "A little blonde girl" is how she was described to me . I assume the trophy was donated by her family. |

replied on: 1/15/2008 12:08:21 PM This may be the reason the cup found its way to Heanor gate? School mag 1965 The 3rd HGS Guide Company It is sad this may be the last account of the Guide Company activities as our members have diminished because of the reorganisation of the secondary schools in the district and there will be a further decrease as this becomes fully operative. Perhaps it will be possible to plan a new company to include all of the secondary schools, but at present this is no more than a pleasant thought for the future. 1966 The hopes expressed in last years reports have to some extent been realised. There is now in existence a Guide company consisting of all members of secondary schools in the area. The main core however is still the Grammar School. In January four girls from Aldercar joined the company, followed in may by girls from heanor gate, Aldercar, Mundy St and nottingham Girls High Schools. This has given the company a new lease of life, as owing to the reorganisationthe company had acquired a rather lob sided look. With this full complement, it is hoped that the company will forge ahead with new vigour. After 1996 through to 1975 there are no entries in the magazine referring to the Guide Company. |
