Shipley Hall Dimensions!
posted on: 12/26/2005 9:22:58 PM

Visited Shipley Park and Hall remains over Christmas and became really interested in the Hall, hence I stumbled across this forum.

I have found theat the information posted on here is fascinating, but I have a thirst for more.

Anyway, my question is this. Are the dimensions of the Hall building marked out in stone correct? The rooms look really small, especially as I read on here the Ballroom had a great organ and the dining room once hosted a dinner for 60. There is no way you'd get more than 8 comfortably seated in that space and no room in the Ballroom for dancing.

My husband was involved in the excavation of the footings of the Hall during his school days, but the site looks totally different now to how it was then.

Do any photo's exist of the interior of the Hall?

Thanks

Welcome to the site, and I hope you will become a regular.

While I can't help with the dimensions of the Hall, I can point you in the direction of a couple of interior shots. Assuming that you are local, pop into the Shipley Park Vistors Centre some time, and buy the leaflet on the History of Shipley Hall - it has two pictures taken inside the hall, and is also the source of the information put on this site regarding balls and banquets, etc. Looking at the pictures, I too struggle to see how they could have squeezed so many people in, but perhaps they had a knack!!!

Thanks, I will pop in and have a look. I live local but am Ilson of origin!

However, I am sure my father in law can contribute a lot more to the site than I can, he's lived in Langly Mill for many years and worked at Turners for years too.

Any contributions, whether 1st, 2nd or 3rd hand are all gratefully received. If your father-in-law has any pictures or documents from his Langley Mill days, then I can always arrange to have copies taken and return them (I'm only in West Hallam myself). It all helps the local history society.

Again, thanks for your interest!

I really enjoyed looking at the postcards that Robert posted on the website. I know the Hall was demolished but do the gatehouse lodges still exist?

Sue

Pleased you liked the postcards - a simple page, but one that is full. I am, though, having to watch the bandwidth on the main site - we may have to start paying a bit more for the site soon, as with extra pictures the bandwidth is rising rapidly.

Yes the lodges are still there.

i'm a little confused as to which angle some of the photo's were taken from.there are two really one is the park and lake section row 2 down shows a bridge, would this be the old railway bridge that still exists at the entrance.and the other is the first card of the four, the picture is facing the lake,is that taken away form the hall end.
