Church Farm still exists in Mapperley today=although not as a farm, the farmhouse is now, and has been for many years, a private dwelling.
It is situated on the corner of Church Lane and Main Street. What was once the farmyard (older villagers remember it being a farmyard) now has a house built on part of it(called Pembroke), the other part is the garden of Church Farm. In front of Pembroke is a large tree planted in a small piece of land-that is the site of the old well yard, which served the farm and part of the village too.A little further up Church Lane are the village stocks (not original ones).
I don't know who lives there now, but about 5/6 years ago the Kenny family lived there, Mrs Kenny was a midwife and Mr Kenny was a doctor (but not a local G.P.). Before them the Davenport family (they were restauranteurs) lived there for quite a number of years-and before them "Amy" resided there for many years, until she died. If you ask any older villager, it is Amy they will remember-she was the local fortune teller, and people used to come from miles around for consultations. The local doctor used to hold a surgery 2 or 3 times a week in one of the "front rooms"- the surgery was held there for many years-from early 1950's and probably much further back than that, and was held there until Amy died-probably 1970's. I remember Dr Michael Skinner telling me how he loved holding the surgery there-and at the end of surgery Amy would always make him ham sandwiches and fruitcake. Church Farm is reputedly haunted by "Little Mary"-who would be seen in an upstairs window supposedly to forwarn whoever saw her of an impending death in the family-I know someone who "saw" her 15 or so years ago -and a death did occur. Amy used to see Little Mary and apparantly would talk to her "Go away, Mary, Stop being naughty"-but I don't know who Little Mary was supposed to be. I don't remember Amy's surname, but I know she lived there for many years- she had no children-and I don't think she had been married. Her death signalled the loss of a doctors surgery in the village and I believe all Amy's worldly goods were left to her niece who lived in London- all the beautiful old farmhouse furniture was cleared out -and it really signified "the end of an era".
