replied on: 7/25/2006 11:47:09 AM An enquiry received - can anyone help? "We have discovered we have a mine shaft in our back garden in Ashforth Avenue, Marlpool. We have been told it was the Waterloo seam from Langley pit, last worked in 1924. Can anyone provide any information as to whether this was an air shaft or an entry? Can anyone supply any records as to the "capping" of this shaft? Any help at all would be very much appreciated." |

replied on: 7/25/2006 3:28:44 PM I am working nights and caught up with this one. I have had a look on old maps and there is an old coal pit marked on the map at what is possibly the end of Ashforth Avenue. This was probably a bell-pit as it would unlikely that a new shaft would be sunk by the New Langley Colliery. The only reason for the shaft to be sunk by the New Langley Colliery would be for ventilation purposes. Other likely candidates to have sunk a shaft couldd have been either New Heanor or Marlpool Colliery. It was common practice to sink a new shaft if the underground roadways had deteriorated badly (cost of shaft sinking is less than cost of repairing the roadway). A History of Mining in the Heanor Area, page 25 fig 5 shows the location of Marpool Mine, Mine title from map. This indicates it was active in working coal. From the above publication, "Marlpool Colliery [my comment, indicates vertical shaft(s)] (Gould and Checkland) is shown on a plan dated 1853. The shafts were sunk to the Waterloo seam. There were workings in the Top Hard and Coombe seams and headings in the Waterloo seam. The date of the last working was 1863". The Waterloo coal was not the best available but was easy to work with a thickness of around 3ft 6ins/ 1 meter. The depth of the Waterloo Seam possibly around 80 yards/metersAt the time Marpool Colliery was active it was common practice to sink a single shaft and divide it vertically. This would allow fresh air to drawn in and stale air to be drawn out. Comments from the publication's authors and researchers could put a lot more flesh on the above bones. I hope the above quotes and comments are of use. regards Phil |

replied on: 7/26/2006 6:56:27 AM Thanks 'Philfred' for your information. Would the presence of this mine shaft in the back garden be of concern to any potential buyers of the house? We seem to have come up against a lot of red tape and cannot get any answers from the coal authority |

replied on: 7/27/2006 3:36:27 PM Please excuse me if this rambles on a bit, night shift etc. The main source of information on this matter is the UK Coal Authority at, http://www.coal.gov.uk The application form for the the search of mining activity is in pdf format. The address for the form is, http://www.coal.gov.uk/media/C6765/ScotForm%2020041.pdf I would imagine that the cost of a search would run into £100s but it may be cheaper. It is possible to view records at the HQ, located in Berry Hill, Mansfield. Information is held going back donkeys years. If it has been capable of being preserved then it has been kept safely. It is possible to view records at the HQ. The procedures are explained somewhere on the Coal Authority site. I.ve not been on Ashforth Avenue for some time. From my paper round days for Billy Robinson, I seem to remember the avenuue dipping down at the end with some small bungalows right at the end. Unfortunately work calls so I must close now. Good Hunting. regards Phil |

replied on: 7/30/2006 1:15:05 PM I have a collection of over 400 links. Looking in the ones that are mining related this one may be of use to you. The British Mining Database at, http://shropshiremines.org.uk/bmd/index.htm There is on the home page, a link for queries of mining related topics. It may be worth posing the question Where was Marlpool Colliery ? If you put a link to this thread with the question you could have the answer. regards Phil |
