Here a website that has a great picture and a list of the men of Mapperley Colliery that died in WWI.

A good website Sue - I'm not sure, but I think my great-uncle is listed there.

I looked at this war memorial web site and think there may be one of my relatives listed also. There was also a comment that although the council insisted on the preservation of this memorial, its future is uncertain.

Is there any way to help preserve this. These men gave their lives and to forget them would be terrible. There is also the family history aspect.

It would be such a shame if nothing could be done to save this bit of history.

1916 PTE WILLIAM HENRY WHITNEY

21ST JANUARY 1916
RIPLEY & HEANOR NEWS

TWO HEANOR SOLDIERS KILLED IN ACTION
Mrs. Whitney residing at 45, Park Street, Heanor, has just received the following letter dated January 9th from Lce. Sergt G. Hunt, Signal Section: “ I am very sorry to write this letter to inform you of the death of your son William, who was killed this morning while doing his duty. I think you will forgive me taking the liberty of writing to you on behalf of his comrades. He was out looking for a broken line and must have exposed himself to the enemy. We know it must be hard for you, and he was so young. He was very well liked by all the Signal Section, who will miss him very much. The sergeant for whom I am writing this was out with him, and he also had a narrow escape.”
Whitney was only 18 years of age.

I contacted mapperley parish Council to see if they knew anything of the whereabouts of the memorial.

Apparantly it has been erected by the War memorial in West Hallam

A member of mapperley Parish council was going to visit the memorial to see it in situ.

Great it has not ended up in a basement or tucked away never to see the light of day again
